Bellwether is an amusing book that is smart and informative and talkes about fads in business and life and how they effect us. It also shows how fads cause chaos or are a result of chaos. You will see many of the stupid fads she talks about at my workplace and other businesses today. I listened to this book almost the whole time with a smile on my face. As for Flip, I seem to run into a version of her all of the time. I gave this book 4 stars and the reader 5 stars. I love the reader's sophisticated snarkiness.
I have really enjoyed several of Connie Willis' books, but this one was just painful. Interesting tidbits on scientific discoveries and societal trends, but the story was very slow and pretty weak. I do have to congratulate Ms Willis for her imagination and detailed research, although I recommend Doomsday Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog. Stay away from this one.
"A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” --C.S. Lewis
Possibly. I love reading this book, I have read it several times. I'm not sure I enjoyed listening to it quite as much.
Oh, I think the main characters were all pretty important.
The narration was kind of flat. I'm really not sure why I didn't enjoy it more but I know that has something to do with it. I know when I read it to myself, the voice in my head is boggled at the chaos and crazy way people behave, and I just didn't get that feeling from her.
I just think the bits about fads and chaos are hilarious.
thought provoking conceptually, but overdosed with irritating 2 dimensional repetitive caricatures. Fad factoid are uninteresting. Some storyline segments are too predictable.
Not very sophisticated, but a fun read, especially for those of us who have worked in academic or lab settings and done research.
Can't remember why I picked this title but very glad I did. I enjoyed the facts in between the 'action' and having spent a little time in Boulder Co. on a teaching exchange it was fun to visit again through the story.
in our lives... find out who yours is, this was one of the best books I have done to date. Well worth you credit or cash! story and narrator excellent. Loved IT!
I'm addicted to Audible. A new grandma I am responsible for my grandsons library, which reignited my interest in books.
Its like the knock knock joke about the banana, until they finally say orange. The story is great at first and the characters seem like they will be interesting but it becomes a broken record, the characters are very one dimensional and what was funny in the beginning is becoming tedious as I continue to listen. Two thirds of the way in I realized there seem to be no story, or climax are anything interesting beyond the beginning fascination with learning about new characters. I had high hopes after having numerous disappointments. But alas it was another let down.
Long and drawn out. Uninteresting characters - flat, have no depth and cliched.
Took a long time to get into the story. Lost interest.
Flip - was not a realistic personage to me. Found passages about her annoying because of this.
