I loved this story and the characters! It has mistery, murder, business and romance.
What I didn't like at all was the performance. The voice of the narrator is always very pleasant and ladylike and the only character that I could imagine speaking like that all the time was Pilar. For all other characters it didn't seem to correspond to my imagine of them, so it was a bit irritating and took the fun out of some parts of the book.
when I am irritated at the audiobook narrator.
The story would be better if reading the physical book. Don’t do the audiobook. The narrator Laurel Merlington ruins it. She didn’t give any warmth to the characters. It was as if they were giving orders all the time. Tyler was not sexy. I was tired of listening and just wanted it to be over. Aside from the narrator, the characters, events, and how things resolved were not as good as they could have been.
ABOUT THE NARRATOR Laurel Merlington:
I kept thinking of Dracula’s accent in a B-Movie. The family name was Giambelli. Most of the time the narrator would draw it out like Geeum-bellllllllll’-ee. That might be ok if an Italian person were speaking, but the narrator would say it during 3rd person narration and when U.S. born characters were speaking. A U.S. born teenager would not say it like that. The same happened with the name Theresa. Too many U.S. characters said the name as if they were Italian like Ta-rrrrrraaaayt’-za (rolling the r). It didn’t always fit.
I did not like the Bela Lugosi style accent the narrator used for ethnic Italians.
My favorite narrator Frank Muller read with a sense of wonder. This narrator did not. Sophia came off angry, cold, and brittle -- no vulnerability. She was not fun to watch. Theresa had no warmth. All her lines were demanding, ordering. In one scene Tyler’s “legs were stretched out, his voice lazy” but the narrator used an abrupt voice for him. And she never made Tyler sound sexy. When Tyler was saying things to Sophia like “I love you” it did not sound like he desired her.
the relationship between Pilar and David and the parts with his teenagers – secondary stories.
Genre: contemporary mystery romance
Loved the story. Explained terms for us that don't make wine. I want to he in a itlatian family. They care and yake of their own thru thick and thin
Audible started me reading fiction again. What a treat to have professional actors narrating a book I may not have had the time to "read".
This book read more like a soap opera. It was also confusing and rather dull. the narrator used the same voice for all the men and they all sounded angry. I do not recommend this book to anyone.
No spoilers! Love HOT, sexy books w/a plot. No vampires, paranormal, teens 4 me. I also review in exchange for books-lots of fun surprises!
I've reviewed over 200 books (not sure how many I've read) so it's hard to say - middle headed toward the top.
Tyler & his grandfather-fantastic, strong men.
She was a great performer.
Sophia Giambelli has never worried about competition. For three generations, the Giambelli wines have been renowned for their quality - from Napa Valley to Italy, and throughout the world. The pride of the Giambelli family and a top PR executive, Sophia loves her job - and excels at it.
But things are about to change at Villa Giambelli. Tereza, the matriarch, has announced a merger with the MacMillan family's winery - and Sophia will be assuming a new role.
As a savvy businesswoman, she knows she must be prepared for anything...but she isn't prepared for Tyler MacMillan. They've been ordered to work together very closely, to facilitate the merger. Sophia must teach Tyler the finer points of marketing - and Ty, in turn, shows her how to get down and dirty, to use the sun, rain, and earth to coax the sweetest grapes from the vineyard.
As they toil together, both in and out of the fields, Sophia is torn between a powerful attraction and a professional rivalry. At the end of the season, the course of the company's future - and the legacy of the villa - may take an entirely new direction. And when acts of sabotage threaten both the family business and the family itself, Sophia's quest will be not only for dominance, but also for survival.
I've noticed NR likes to show off her research and a lot of the time it can get tedious but that was not the case here. I could care less about wine but the detail did not distract or bore me.
"The Villa" is funny, romantic and suspenseful enough to keep you up all night. I can't believe I listen to 16 hours straight through, but I was so engrossed in the the story I couldn't stop listening to it--this is one story you don't want to miss a word of.
There's a large cast of interesting people, and Laural Merlington gives a great performance creating mental pictures of the grand Giambelli family and their merger with MacMillan wines....about their Italian and Californian vineyards, with even a little wine-making instructions thrown in.
"The Villa" is entertainment at it's best, and I highly recommend it.
I'm a busy mom who loves to listen to books. Mostly I listen on my way to and from work.
Yes definitely and I already have.
There were so many good ones that it is hard to just pick one!
La Senora and Pelar and well all of them. She had a great accent and you always knew who was talking becaus she was that good at changing her voice.
It was just an overall good story with great love stories, a great family story, and a great mystery with good twists and turns.
A great listen, you won't be dissappointed.
Honor, death and love.
I liked the family business and the different interactions between family members and the running of the business.
When the true killer reveals why he/she did the killing. I don't want to give it away.
Be careful who you hurt, they may be crazy enough to really seek revenge.
This is one of her better books.
I have a busy career, travel a lot and don't have much time to read, so I listen to Audio books. I love reading!
As usual.. the typical mix of love, romance, treachery, murder, "I love you, I hate you, I never want to see you again.... and I love you forever".
A satisfying meal of Nora Roberts..
Yes if someone wants more of a romance novel than a mystery this a good book has strong characters and decent build up.
Her Italian accent
Yes I only got half the book
