An excellent story, or pair of stories, but totally bogged down by the insertion of the same old tired seduction scenes - how do lips "intertwine" anyway? I was able to fast-forward through a great deal of that, but was disappointed to find that one must purchase the subsequent books in order to know what happens in the present-day story, and (one assumes) further installments of the historical portion of the tale. I won't be buying them, and will just have to guess at - or make up - the ending. Shouldn't be too difficult.
I own a small shop selling custom/costume Jewelry. I love to listen to audio books while I create jewelry. I love all animals and get very upset when they aren't treated well, even in fiction.
Did not enjoy this one! The part of the book where the main character is supposedly reading old letters or a diary, doesn't read that way at all! Really had to struggle to wade through this one! Predictable romance... No thanks! How did this one get made into an audio, when there are so many really great books out there that haven't? "Hotel" "Class Reuion" "Tourist" etc
This was a great mix of modern and past romance as two characters intertwine. Leaves you looking for the next part of the story. Well written and the Narrator Kate Reading added to it! Thanks for making it so easy to pass my exercise and housework time with the story going in my ear time flies!
I found myself not being able to keep a smile off my face while listening to this book. I even caught myself laughing outloud. I thought it was delightfully entertaining. I will be definitely be reading another book written by Lauren Willig.
If you are looking for a clever romance on the level of "The Scarlet Pimpernel", this book is not for you. This is definitely a formula romance novel using the Scarlet Pimpernel name to set the stage. It was cute, but not original. The beginning was promising with the researcher, but goes one dimensional from there. No suspense or real conflict between the two main characters. The reader needs to work on male voices as she just can't pull it off. A male voice is more than just lower than a female voice, especially when that low voice is out of the range of what the female reader can do. I quit listening 30 minutes from the end as I got too bored. I was looking for something a little more literary. I might try again when I want something uncomplicated to listen to. If you are looking for formula romance (and sometimes I am) this book will do quite nicely.
This was an Audible.com selection, The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willing.
If you are a fan of old movies, I am sure you will remember Travor Howard as the Scarlet Pimpernel. You may also have heard of another English fellow, the Purple Gentian. But, have you heard of the Pink Carnation? Me either before this listen; thanks to our heroine, Eloise Kelly! In Eloise's search she comes across letters that tell us "the secret".
The dialog as quick witted as the pace is fast and salted with humor.
Give yourself a giggle and check this one out.
"Good heavens," I found this book to be very entertaining and couldn't wait to get back into my car to listen. Although based on history, I wouldn't read this story for that reason. It's a basic love story. At times it's a bit frustratingly predictible.
The story meshes two stories together - one in current times and the other in the times of Napoleon. I could have done without the current day story - I found that storyline to lack in realistic character interaction.
I was disappointed by the ending though. I understand this is a series book but the ending of the book raises more questions than answers.
Even though it was a bit cheesy at times, and there were two sexual encounters that were unnecessaryily descriptive (and actually took away from the story for me), I still found myself laughing out loud at times and wanting more. All and all, I'd recommend it.
This is funny & easy read. Some of the romance is a bit cheesy, but the author put a smile on my face and I just enjoyed listening. I can't wait to read the sequel. If you want deep and indepth intellectual reading skip this one. This is for fun!
I thought this book was very good I loved the suspence and romance together I didn't put my Ipod down untill the book was over it was that good
