"Great story, writing, not so much."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Repetitive language! Apparently, every time someone chooses not to say anything, Child feels obligated to let you know. "Reacher was silent." "Reacher said nothing." For a book with such a good story, wow did that ever annoy me.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The final showdown was well done.

    Any additional comments?

Don't get me wrong, this was a very interesting story. The narrator did a fine job as well, though he's not the best with female voices. If it weren't for the repetitive phrases that felt like lazy writing, I would have been happy with this purchase. It was just too much though. If you have the chance to borrow it from a library or something, I'd recommend that, but I can't suggest you purchase it if you like solid prose.

"it could have been a good story, but it sucked."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

someone who does not like to think.

Has One Shot turned you off from other books in this genre?

    hollywood blockbuster advertising? yes.

What didn’t you like about Dick Hill’s performance?

the performance was fine, just don't want to recommend the audio book.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from One Shot?

it felt to me there were too many contradictions in the characters personalities. the story was hard to believe.

    "One Shot - Great Story!"

I first heard of Jack Reacher through the new Jack Reacher movie preview. That preview with Tom Cruise looked awsome so I went and checked out the Book. After reading the first 20 pages for free on Amazon.com I went and bought it on Audible.com and I loved it. It is full of crime scene deductions that really drive a story. It stays interesting all through out the book. It made me go back to Audible.com and buy "The killing Floor" (Another great story). In my job I work many hours alone and having a great story to listen to while I work is awsome. I highly recomend this Book to anyone interested in Mystery, action and adventure.

Middle aged female who loves books of all kinds as long as the story is engaging. Doesn't review all books she reads, but does read all reviews of books she reads. Haha.

    ""and Reacher said nothing""

All in all this was an entertaining book. I am glad that I read it after watching the movie with Tom Cruise as Reacher as I would have ruined the movie for my husband by constantly pointing out the differences between the two! The only flaw with the book is the constant saying of "and Reacher said nothing". It must have been in there 100 times! Not kidding. Gave it four stars for the entertainment value.

"Even jumping into the series, this was good."

Good story and good thriller. I'm a Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan and Ken Follett/Century trilogy person, and I'm hard to please on narration of women's voices. This was a good audiobook, and it held my attention from start to finish. I don't do a lot of short thrillers, but this was a good one. I wanted to know the book before seeing the movie. (Haven't seen the movie yet.) Admittedly, the "so and so said nothing" would probably be a little tiresome in print, but with this narrator and in a fairly short book, it was fine. The narrator did a good job making the voices distinguishable and keeping his women's voices from being annoying. The "ID" says Robert, but I'm his wife and the main user of audiobooks in the family, so this is a woman's opinion.

"The first Reacher book I ever read"

If you like the basic formula of the hero who is always two steps ahead of everyone else and always seems to beat the odds and win the day then this book is for you. I will say that I did not go through these books in order and since Audible had this book on Sale for $6.95 and the movie was coming out soon I figured why not. And I have to say I am not disappointed in the least bit. The book has an interesting story line and characters that you find yourself easily relating to. Child has an interesting habit of picking up a small details or his characters have random thoughts that I as a reader could easily have seen myself doing. In this book there is a barber with a sign “All styles $7.00” and Reacher seems to repeat that line to himself several times. I could see myself doing the same thing, so it really helped me embrace the character.
I dinged the performance one star because of a personal preference. Whenever there were characters in the book talking on the radio on a phone the narrator’s voice gets put through some sort of effect to make it sound similar to talking in a tunnel or the small crackle of white noise. I find this annoying and a bit distracting. If I wanted special affects I would go see a movie. But that is just my personal feelings. The Narrator himself Dick Hill I think turned in another great performance (I have listened to several other books he narrated and have yet to find where he does a bad job).

Getting away from the book itself and looking at the transition to the big screen really makes me wonder how they are going to do it. First off allot of the book and allot of the Jack Reacher character is based on his large size. The guy is supposed to be six foot five inches tall and weighs two hundred and fifty pounds. And somehow the actor Tom Cruise is supposed to pull this off at his five feet seven inches height, and he probably does not weight much over one hundred and seventy pounds. There are many times in the book where Reacher is identified by his build and in one of the fight scenes he uses his size specifically as a weapon. In humble opinion the actor that plays Opie on Son’s of Anarchy would be a much better Jack Reacher the Tom Cruise. But please do not let any of my comments about the adaptation to the movie deter you from buying the book. What does everyone always say “Oh yeah read the book! It was much better than the movie.”

    "Great Adrenaline!"

While I could see many other actors in this role given the fact that Tom Cruise is much smaller than Jack, he is a very physical actor and that is what it takes to be Jack Reacher. This is my first encounter with a Jack Reacher novel and I must say if they are all this busy with information and physicality, I will love reading them!

While there were times I believed I had some things figured out by what Jack had said or didn't say, then I would find out it changed. So I was happy to see that, yes we could figure some things out, but there could always be a twist keeping us on the edge of our seat and intrigued.

A great novel and very much enjoyed!

    "Superman Lives!"

Although this story has some interesting action parts --- over all if it where not for the main character Jack Reacher (Superman) it would be a "dull" happening! Jack came up with a solution to the case a ---"miraculously" of the top of his head and the "day was won!"

    Hurray!!!
