I have also listened to the unabridged Christopher Hurt version for the first 20 hours and found the story to have far more depth than this one. Sadly I was unable to navigate the chapters on my kindle on the unabridged version, so was unable to continue after accidentally resetting it to the start again. Audible kindly exchanged it for this abridged version, but the story is simply not as compelling.
I would definitely recommend going with the unabridged version if you can navigate the chapters properly on your device.
I'm not even sure how I came across this audiobook as I had never even heard of it before! I'm glad I did though as I'm quite certain this is the best book I've ever listened to or read! Even more amazing is how relevant it is to what's going on the world today! The narration is fantastic as well. Going to get a hold of the book so I can read the full version!
Professional librarian type, amateur historian.
This was my first Ayn Rand book or anything. I couldn't put this down but knowing there is a 35-55 hour unabridged version out there I was okay when it was done. The romantic parts and the long philosophical sermons had me either rolling my eyes or snickering, but other than that I really enjoyed listening to this book and I might even consider other Rand audiobooks that can be done in a days time.
The characters do get a little unbelievable as the story goes on, but the story is interesting enough to suspend that reality about what we know about human beings and the diversity of humanity, regardless of each person's personal philosophy. Also around the second half it reminded me of survivalist ITEOTWAWKI lit, minus the stockpiling.
I would definitely recomment this book to a friend. I listen to it once a year.
This is by far her best. yes, it may be painfully long but once done it is very satisfying.
Just get the unabridged version. The abridged cuts way too much stuff out and makes the story hard to follow.
I really enjoyed this book. It is Abridged, but don't let that scare you as it is still very detailed. I didn't listen to the enabridged version, but I cannot image I missed anything. The sound quality was great. I had no issues. I think I have my settings set to download enhanced or something. The Narrater is just awesome. He is clear easy to understand and very enjoyable to listen too. He uses different voices for each character and before long you start to recognize each charater voice. This made it very easy to follow along.
I highly recommend this book. Great story, yet has a very important message. Ayn Rand wrote this book so long ago as a foresight to what will happen if the government controls society for our safety and fairness. LISTEN TO IT.
Ayn Rand is a wonderful writer - she illustrates her perspective beautifully, her views are not necessarily mainstream but they are well presented here.
This book was written in the 50's but has concerning applications to what happening today both in the economy and our governments involvement. You'll listen to the book and then listen to the news and will have to remind yourself you've stopped listening to the book. Amazingly appropriate for the time. I would recommend the abridged version for those with limited attention span like me....
As social philosophy, Atlas Shrugged is a surprisingly well-expressed work that is incorporated into a compelling storyline. The author framed his arguments in such a way that every reader can understand. Moreover, the lessons learned can be applied to today's headlines, and will undoubtedly be applicable tomorow.
Ayn Rand was a prophet a visionary way before her time.
This book should be mandatory reading by all High School students.
The parallels to current social and political events is uncanny.
