Writer, Regency lover, historic novel aficionado.
Absolutely. It was wonderful hearing Barbara Leigh-Hunt narrate. Anyone who's seen AMC's Pride and Prejudice will recognize her as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. I found that I even understood the book more listening to Leigh-Hunt narrate.
I don't want to give it away, but at the end, when Mr. Calverly returns to Bath. You suspect you know what he's been up to at this point, and it's wonderful getting that validation.
I have not.
Immensely satisfying. I laughed for sure.
I wish Leigh-Hunt would read more of Heyer's works. It's great fun and a pleasure to listen to.
I would listen again because I love the characterizations and the wonderful dialogues.
It is Georgette Heyer at her most entertaining.
She is one of the best narrators of this series.
I'm very disappointed in the reading of this, one of my favorite Georgette Heyer novels. The Heroine is under 30 with a lovely, "musical" voice.
The narrator's voice sounds old, rather like Eve Arden, and just doesn't fit with the whole atmosphere.
I don't think I'll purchase any more books with this narrator.
One of the more wittier of Heyer's works. Not that her other works aren't just as witty, but this one actually succeeded in making me laugh several times. There were several characters that made me grind my teeth but the humor and wit between the heroine and hero were more than enough to make up for it. One of my favorite now
The narrator's voice was too gravelly and rough to appropriately depict a 28 year old Abby who supposedly had a melodious voice. I found it quite distracting and continuously took me out if the story. Her diction and dramatics were very good, but her voice just did not suit the main character and her range of character voices fell a bit short too. It was sometimes difficult to distinguish which character was speaking.
The story, of course, was classic Heyer and one of her better efforts. Always a favorite of mine.
The Grand Sophy and Black Sheep are my two favorites from Georgette Heyer. I love the light hearted dialogue and the way Ms Heyer weaves her stories. She never leaves her characters hanging but always brings them together in the end. I don't believe I have missed any of her books over the years and am very pleased that I am able to listen to them while I go about my days. I love your service and I love your extensive library. Thank you!
The wit and humor of Georgette Heyer is timeless. I read my first Georgette Heyer novel over 50 years ago. I'm delighted to find they are still better than most other Recency romances around today. If anyone hasn't read her, start with this one as the narrator does a fantastic job. Also, it comes with the e-book so is an awesome way to do both.
Absolute bluestocking & love it!!
You will not find 'same ol - same ol' with Georgette Heyer - her characters are so fun & unique& her stories find you laughing out loud or sitting with a silly smile on your face! I love the humor and interesting characters she brings to life!!
Strong male and female leads, appropriate conflict, wit and clever dialogue for making love, romantic dialect and accent. What's not to like?? I loved it!!
