I love supernatural horror stories and this is absolutely one of the best I have ever read. It stands out shoulder to shoulder with Stephen King and James Herbert. I don't know if it was her ethnic background that gives her such wonderful insight into supernatural folk lore and legends or if she is just a great weaver of campfire tales, but I was hooked immediately.
Wonderful story from beginning to end. The author really pulls you in with the spiritual history of the ancestors.
The narrator truly made this story come alive.
I couldn't wait till I could find a time to continue listening.
I wish they would've made this into a movie. It would be nice to see it play out on screen.
this was an intriguing listen, i enjoyed it! I have a keen interest in the supernatural and the author did a great job weaving "good vs. evil" forces together resulting in a surprise ending. Worth the listen!
I really enjoyed this book. It's the first one I've liked in months. The story is compelling & the narrator is excellent. I do not have Creole ancestry, to my knowledge but I've always been fascinated by it. From the other stories I've read this one seems to be consistent with that heritage.
Robin Miles is ridiculously talented so far as narrators go. I want to say that there were more than a dozen characters and she managed to give each a distinct flavor and energy. Robin Miles reminds us all that narrating is a legitimate art form and it really can make or break an audiobook. I wish that Toni Morrison would use her talent instead of (badly) reading her own audio books.
Now, on to the actual story! This author has become an instant favorite. This is my first time experiencing a work of horror. I love horror movies and am rarely scared but there were moments in this work though that gave me chills. As a lover of the Vodoun spiritual practice I've got to say that I didn't roll my eyes even once at the portrayal. It's image in this work is quite beautiful in my opinion.
Tananarive thank you so much for sharing your talent with the world!!
I liked the premise of the book. I liked the story structure with flashbacks. But it just kept on going. As I look back I can't say that there were parts that didn't belong, but I kept wondering if this book would ever end. what I find most interesting is the last book I listened to was 41 hours long and I wished it would keep going.
Amazing story teller, excellent writer. I liked flow, detailed descriptions of characters, location and background. Really could not stop listening. Fab narrator! A plus.
