While listening to the first few chapters I thought this was another sweet, uncomplicated story. Boy, was I wrong! Such a beautifully written book-I had to stop more than once because I was about to cry. For me, there are some stories that are better when everything doesn't turn out perfectly for everyone. I guess because at my age I know that isn't how life is. When an author can weave a tale of loss and sacrifice and love and turn it into a thing of beauty I am humbled. I think Ms Austin's story is a work of Christian fiction at its best, with characters who are flawed, very human and a reflection of people we may know in our own lives.
When Aunt Batty was young and her true love was describing heaven and death. We are loosing my mom to Alzhiemers and I started sobbing as I was cleaning my stairs-it was so beautiful and hopeful! (They were good tears, mostly, not sad ones)
Aunt Batty because your first impression of her is that she is the eccentric old aunt but she isn't!!
I will definitely listen to this again and again-narration was VERY well done and I loved listening to every minute.
I just listened to it for the third time and I am sure I will listen to it again!
Aunt Batty. She was utterly delightful and so full of love.
She brings their personalities to life.
All of them.
This is a beautiful uplifting book.
enjoyed this book very much... it was kind of choppy, the way each character seemed to have their own little story within the book, but they all tied together well in the end. the historical perspective was refreshing, a time period I don't see often in fiction. it was a bit too long, and I didn't understand why some of the secrets took so long to come to light - seems to me that these people cared about each other too much to keep everything hidden and therefore drag out the pain (and the readers pain) so long! and, wow, did fathers come off looking like jerks in this saga! still, overall a memorable and worthwhile story.
My only disappointment was that I wish the author would have taken advantage of the opportunities she had to share the plan of salvation, instead of making it sound like God is good and loves everybody (which is very true)...and that's all there is to it.
The narrator did very well ! The characters were very believable. The author does a great job with this genre it's not our typical run of the mill christian fiction.
Lynn Austen had done it again. SUCH a good story. And Rurh Ann Phimister did a superb job of narrating it. You won't be disappointed in this book!
This book was SO well performed, I could hardly put it down. I had to force myself to stop listening and work on my home chores. I listened to it at work, while driving, shopping, bathing, and while eating. You will not regret your purchase!
