Two children witness a brutal execution. One of the killers spots them and the children run with the killers hot on their trail. Great action, believable characters, and a story that will have you reading into the wee hours with nail biting interest.
I highly suggest all of C J Box books. I have read them all - first the Joe Pickett series and then all the stand alones like this one.
It was even better due to the narration of John Bedford Lloyd. He performed many different voices and they were all distinct.
Actually, I didn't want to be kept so very wide awake at night, but the book is a thriller.
The worse-than-you-could-imagine deceptions kept happening, and the setting and characters made it plausible.
C.J. Box kepts coming up with plots so bizarre that you "can't make this stuff up." I just hope he's making it up.
probably not. it was good but not that good
the last 90 minutes
The last 90 minutes would have been a page turner if I was actually reading. What bothered me the most was the hispanic accent on both the latino cops. Not everyone latino has an accent. just like all irish don't speak with an accent. seemed a bit much.
I don't usually rush out for all the "best sellers", but give each intriguing book/author a look. I have found many diamonds in the rough.
This was a good story, however, I think that the newer Joe Pickett series stories are better. His newer novels have a smoother presentation. I enjoyed the characters and the unexpected ending. It was fun to read this on a buddy read.
Audiobook. The first few pages grab your interest with a grizzly event involving two children witnessing a murder. The remainder of this procedural drama traverses the adventures of a toughened rancher seeking the answers. Bad cops have infiltrated a peaceful Idaho community.
The individual motivations of characters is nicely done, you feel sorry for some, detest others. Empathy is drawn even to peripheral characters caught up in the scenarios created.
No spoilers, but there are a few surprise deaths; the ending of the book is disappointing in that it became a bit ethereal. This isn’t an element throughout the book, only the last chapter.
I had no trouble with the reader; he did very well with a variety of ages, sexes, and ethnicities. No trouble determining who-said-what-to-who. Not what anyone would label as a deep book, simply a nice page-turning mystery. Easy listen.
Living in a log home in the tall trees, surrounded by wildlife and streams, it is easy to find myself enveloped within a great story!
this book would be great for the listener that loves a genre with few twists and can enjoy predicting the next step.
has not turned me away from the genre, but it just made me feel like I was watching a "Columbo" episode. I knew who dunnit.
Too many female leads and JBL doesn't carry a female voice very well.
Though I finished it, I walked away several times and could figure it out if I missed a large section. I did not have to rewind it. I think a bit of disappointment would best describe it.
I order three CJ Box books at the same time, I do hope the other two are less predictable. My father loved Blue Heaven and recommended it to me, just wasn't for me though.
Tell us about yourself! I am a 65 year old attorney licensed in two states with a very active insolvency practice. My Hobbies include training Labrador Retrievers and listenting to tape books.
I am from the town where Mr. Box resides and revel in his local color. This storey is rich, diverse, and the characters are nicely developed. I found it difficult to turn off my MP3 player until the dust settled.
I liked the old rancher, of course, but little Annie and her mom became friends, and all the bad guys really got what they deserved.
To many were well done for me to pick a favorite. Just about every character mentioned was pretty thourghly developed and became recognizable.
No but I quickly took sides with the good guys and found myself anxious to follow their fates.
a must read if intertainment is one of your goals.
Box does an awesome job of setting the story up. Two kids see a murder....and the murders want to shut them up. Good plot--which kept me listening, but the very end didn't match the gruesome story. Still, I enjoyed listening and would recommend it.
Mu favorites are paranormal, supernatural, post-apocalyptic, and horror!
Blue Heaven was exciting and fast paced from the moment i began the novel. The characters come alive and pull the reader into the story. Sometimes I had a sneaking suspicion regarding what was about to happen - but other times i was completely shocked and caught myself yelling out loud in suprise! I couldn't turn off my ipod as i just had to know what was going to happen next. There are no slow parts to this story. I highly recommend this book as a fast paced, intense, mystery adventure. I would like to read similar titles by this author.
As an entreprenuer, it is hard for me to shut off my brain! It is also hard for me to sit still! I love audibles! I can exercise, work on "chores" , travel and be entertained! Always looking for a good story!
The characters surprised me! I hated hearing a man only in his 60s described as old? But other than this, I think this is a good book to listen to for entertainment. And the bad guys got what was coming to them.
