I chose this based entirely on the reviews here at Audible. I had no knowledge of the authors. I am SO glad I listened to this. A truly unique take on some classic ideas - but don't let that fool you into thinking you've already heard it...you haven't. Nicely drawn characters, a spellbinding story (except for the love scenes - the authors need some real work there) and MAGNIFICENT narration by Mr. Auberjenois add up to an "unable to turn it off" listen. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll understand that a 5 star rating is not one that I give lightly. This is a 5. GET THIS AUDIBLE - you will not regret it. Also, Still Life With Crows by the same author is a strong 4 rating.
I enjoy all of the Pedrergast novels, but this one was a little off-putting in the beginning. It seemed like it was being rushed along without the usual detailed background of a Child-Preston novel. When I figured out it was an abridged version it made sense. Highly recommend only reading the unabridged versions. The imense detail these guys provide really makes for a compete experience. Good story, in any case.
I found the book entertaining but I think I would have like an unabridged version better.
However, I wasn't paying attention and saw it was abridged and I really wish it wasn't. It made me stop downloading the audiobooks in this series because 1/2 of them are abridged! I plan on reading the rest traditionally vs. listening which is too bad as I listen constantly to books while I work and don't have as much time to read as I would like.
While this book is another great casual listen it really to sad that there is no unabridged version. The story jumps around a lot and you get the feeling that you are missing a lot of great story.
I have just come across this series and I have become an instant fan. Years ago I did see the movie "Relic" and I had no idea that it was based on books by Douglas Presong and Lincoln Child. The book is well written and the characters are easy to follow. Rene Auberjonois's voice will keep you captivated until the last chapter. It is a must listen, however I wish it was the unabridged version. I can't wait to download the next book in the series.
This is our first abridged version of a book. And we had a unique opportunity as we listened to most of the unabridged version on borrowed CDs that didn't all work. This is what we learned: It's a lot like seeing the movie after you've read a book. If you want the nuts and bolts of a story, abridged is ok, but you loose all the fun stuff. The characters and events that make it interesting but aren't necessary to the single plot aren't there.
All this being said, the Pendergast series is imaginative, scary and just plain fun reading and we're enjoying them all. This book gets minus a star because it's abridged.
I am absolutely addicted to the Pendergast books by Preston and Child, but I'm very disappointed that this is an abridged version of the book! The story is great, and Rene Aberjonois is a wonderful narrator, but now I wonder about the details that were cut out of the story for this version. Only 4 stars.
