I thoroughly enjoy this listen -- I liked the well-constructed plot, although I knew where it was going. But the narration put it over the top -- so well done. Overall, I'd rate this as one of the more enjoyable books, but not at the top.
I might have laid out fewer story-line cues so that the listener wouldn't get too far ahead of the plot.
This was the first John Lee I've heard. I'll be on the lookout for others.
When Harold's father lied to protect Harold. It went against his beliefs and the love for his son became more important.
I do recommend this book. It's a wonderful listen -- lots of detail, which I liked because I it gave me clearer images in my mind. If you're not a fan of detail, I wouldn't recommend this book.
Details, and the story itself.
Why make this reviews so painful? why not settle for a short to the point comment and that is it, maybe some other people like to go on and on but then some of us just do not have the time to be yakking about something that I enjoyed personally.
It seems that Follett has about 5 or 6 cardboard character templates that populate all his books. It is so wooden even John Lee can't bring them to life.
Do you read the book before you dislike my reviews?
Hornet Flight is a great introduction to the author if you are not familiar to Follett's other work. Unlike his other epic novels that is really long and really well written, "Hornet Flight" gives you a glimpse of historical fiction, action, romance, and good old fashion family drama. This can all be achieved within 14 hours.
After you read this title, you will be ready for more, like Pillars of Earth, Fall of Giants, and many more intensive writing from Ken Follett. Many of his books are also in the abridge version, such as this one.
Please don't think about getting any of his books abridge because you will be cheating yourself. You will be missing a whole lot of substance from a marvelous writer.
To sum up my thoughts on this review, think Top Gun, but during the Second World War.
Good action in the sky.
The wonderful narration and amazing performance of the Danish accents. John Lee is a master with accents and gives each character a distinct voice that makes the listening so much more enjoyable.
Without giving much away, the sacrifice Arnie makes left the biggest impression on me during this story.
Yes, and I think this one was just as amazing as the rest of his performances. This was different because I had never heard an entire book with these type of accents.
Yes, especially when the chase begins to really pick up. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened.
Blind Vietnam veteran. Antique weapons collector. Outdoor enthusiast. Florida State University graduate with Business major. Owner of home health agency. registered nurse.
Yes! I WILL listen to Hornet Flight again.
This book was a great plunge into the mess that a start of a war can make of the lives of the people it affects.
The plot was artfully constructed and eminently believable. Follet is a helluva storyteller.
John Lee's characterizations and his tempo are perfect for the personalities and for the plot.
How good people can triumph over evil people
I had family in the Norwegian underground in WWII. I felt this story was realistic.
Ken Follett has a wonderful way of combining history and fiction. His characters are well developed and John Lee excels at bringing them to life.
The plot has many twist and turns which captures the imagination, but is predictible. I don't look to Mr Follett for suprise endings, but rather to be carried back to the times and places in which he sets his stories.
Yes, A seat of the pants thriller. A great listen for a long drive, you won't want to stop for gas.
Edge of the seat. Every problem that could arise did. Excellent detail and well told.
Can't recall. Good voices though.
I laughed and cheered!
This is the fourth Follett book, or maybe the fifth I've read/listened to, and I find him to be most satisfying. Somewhat simplistic and not up to Eye of the Needle, Hornet Flight is still a good read. It revisits one of his passions, spies during WWII, but it is a great seam to be mined. I read both of the books about Knightsbridge cathedral, nice and long, and found them also very enjoyable. I'll continue to sample his work. If you are a fan, this is a middling choice but worth your time.
Taking pictures on the base.
Enjoyed the story very much and there were times that I got so involved in the story I found it difficult to stop listening.
Harold and Arnie were the unexpected heroes of the story. They came through when others thought them not capable.
Harold was my favorite.
I enjoyed Harold's looking for his brother and unexpectedly finding a policeman at the safe house and Harold immediately pretending he was the husband of an expecting wife.. and he was looking for the doctor. It was cute.
I have enjoyed the other Ken Follett books I have listened to on Audible. This was not as long as his other works, but a very enjoyable story and performance. The performance helped me very much to imagine the characters, their location, and the action of the story.
