This spy thriller is so full of twists and turns while we learn the culture of the time and the way people had to take desperate actions for our country without internets, phones, suppleis. Never a dull moment!
Don't you just love a great story well told?
Follett is always at his best when doing historial fiction. Like Pillars... and World... (both spoiled me for very long very excellent books) his usual cast of heroes whom are easy to root for. The tension of the omni-present Nazi police adds much excitement. We know they don't play fair. It has its share of twists but mostly you just want the protagonists (the resistance) to succeed. More excellent narration, this time with a Nordic/Swedish accent that adds a sense of place. A classic? Of course not. A great fun "read"? You bet!
This was a great read.A great plot and complex yet plausible characters . I not only found this a classic spy novel but great love story. John Lees narraration made it easy to complete in 3 sittings.
Started a wee bit slow but picked up the pace with good story content and action that kept you wanting more each time you had to stop. Highly recommend this to all action readers. Charming romance evolves throughout.
Excellent story about the early WWII and Danish resistance. The story gives an accurate description of life the Denmark in the early 40s and how the Danes tried to cope with the German occupation. I grew up in Denmark, and when I was a teenager spoke to my grandfather, who was in his 30s during the occupation, at length. Follett story pretty much matches what I recall hearing.
I do wish that John Lee had spoken to a Dane before trying to pronounce names and locales. I had to actually look in the book several times in order to figure out what or who he was talking about. And I grew up on the west coast of Denmark within 50 miles of much of the action! Otherwise, John Lee?s narration is world-class, as always.
A great book. Many well defined characters with realistic interactions. A lot of technical discussions of different things: flying, mechanics, etc. One of the most exciting endings I have ever read. Highly recommended.
A wonderful story. The characters were well developed, and the story kept my attention. Although the ending was predictable, this book was more about the journey then the denstionation.
