I have been reading King ever since I can remember. The characters, the story line and even the narration is superb. Definitely worth the listen you will not be disappointed!
It was a little difficult to keep up with so many characters, but that that is a small point as far as I am concerned. I thought the story was well done and the narrator added to the telling rather than detracted .
One of Kings best in a long time in my view!
This isn't really a horror book. Nothing even remotely horror-related begins to happen until Part Four. What little "speculative fiction" the book contains, makes it clear that it's only a plot device to study human nature.
King takes a long cast of characters and subjects them to the most extreme stress tests to see what happens. We the readers will recognize every last detail, because the human soul is laid bare and it is ours.
Didn't think King had this level of sophistication in him! He may never win a Pulitzer for his prose, but his understanding of human nature is intense.
There are indeed a lot of characters in the book. After a few minutes the leads are easy to remember and the rest, well, don't sweat it, nothing is lost if some of the peripheral characters are forgotten.
As noted in several other reviews, the book is full of foul language, and details revolting (and illegal) behavior including rape and necrophilia. Not enjoyable in themselves, but for me, it certainly didn't spoil the book because they were describing the dark side of human nature, and that's what this book is all about. Sadly for all of us, we are capable of some really revolting behavior. King is holding up a mirror to us all.
I enjoyed the first 30 hours of this book but the ending was awful.I am amazed that an author of this reputation couldn't come up with a better ending. It was downright silly. I felt like the author got tired of writing or bored with the project before he finished it. It was also unbelievable that the supposedly intelligent characters made only one feeble attempt to eliminate the problem that threatened to destroy them. Not realistic. Still, I enjoyed the first 90% of the book.
retired litigation lawyer; I read history; historical fiction; literary fiction. Narrator ++ important. Story equally so
I "was" a fan of King's earlier works, one time reading them all in a row. My favoritte was "It". Then I found myself giving up on him. I couldn't get through ( either book or audiobook) either Duma Key or Lisey's story ( although I did enjoy his short story collection "Just After Sunset"). I therefore took a chance on "Under the Dome" and, similar to others, was hooked after 45 minutes. This is the longest audiobook I have ever bought ( my average is @ 20 hours) but I did not lose interest, at all, ever. The images, colors, sounds, smells are vivid, the characters ( King's speciality) well defined - he painted pictues in my mind that stayed with me, and left me interested to return while washing the dishes, return while driving to work, etc . It was the SK of old that I had enjoyed so much. I also thought the narration was perfect - I did not understand the critical comments expressed by other reviews. So I highly recommend it.
The book was epic,..Mr. Esparza is a very talented actor but I feel he tried a bit too hard to differentiate the characters by varying the accents. Well worth the time!!!!
I recently purchased "Under the Dome" hoping the long book wouldn't drag on and on like some seem to and was plesantly surprised. It is a great book that is easy to become enthralled in after just a short listen. The Narrator brings the charactors to life and each one is easily identifyable, something I really appreiciate. The story is captivating and moves along smoothly. I paid full price for it and it's worth every penny! Stephen King has done it again - you just can't beat "The King"!! Thanks Audible, you keep me coming back for more....
I never would have thought I'd ever recommend a Stephen King book (I'm not a horror fan), but this was worth all 30 plus hours. Duma Key was my first King novel and this was every bit as good. I was expecting a little different of an ending but it does not dampen my strong recommendation!!! Would definitely recommend!!!
