I purchased this after reading the publisher's blurb, hoping my older kids(17, 20)might enjoy it also. After listening, I do not plan to recommend the book to them. There is a particularly ugly rape scene at the beginning, and the "bad guy" characters are just nasty. Foul language is used throughout the book. Maybe the author was going for length--cutting out just the F word in all its variations would practically cut the novel in half. Plotwise,I was reminded a little of a modern day Lord of the Flies, with profanity. (Lots of it.) The human race (with a very few exceptions) and particularly Christians, do not fare well in this book. The ending seems contrived and flat.
I have grown up on Stephen King, I was the weird girl in 7th grade reading Carrie. I loved this book, it was a little slow in some places, but the last part ROCKED!!! I will to listen to it again after I finish another book. My best friend is reading the book, I got the better deal... Great listen in the car. Didn't want to stop and go to work.
It reminds me quite a bit of the Tommyknockers but is much better written. Overall, the book itself is very enjoyable - the ensemble cast of characters (which is quite large) are all interesting, distinct, and instantly identifiable. I'd give the contents of the book 4 out of 5 stars.
Why is my rating 5 stars then? The narrator. This is the first book I've listened to by Raul Esparza but he's easily one of the best narrators I've ever listened to - he manages to do all kinds of very distinct voices and accents that make the characters (and there are a lot) instantly identifiable. In addition, some of the "voices" he does are perfect (at least for me) for the charcters - Big Jim is absolutely perfect; Junior and Andy Sanders similarly. Great, great stuff.
I like the experience of listening and reading at the same time. Unfortunately, this unabridged version seems like an abridged version. It does not follow the book at all. The actual book starts by introducing the characters and their encounters with the Dome but this audio unabridged version starts way after the Dome is discovered and the chaos that ensues from its arrival. So if you want to read the whole story buy the actual book. But if you like an unabridged version that is still chopped down, listen to this audio version.
I haven't cared too much for Stephen King's work for some time. He did have several very good books but after a while it seemed that there was nothing very original left in him.
I wanted to get the hardcover but just couldn't bring myself to buy another book of his that I might hate myself for again.
I was hooked. I'm half-way thru it and I can say I'm glad...so far. As long as there is no cheesey/slock ending, I can say that this work is sitting well with a past reader of his.
I thought it would be too long and I was wrong. I found the time flying by. It's pure Stephen King and wonderfully read. It's a perfect match of reader and story.
Steven King does not disappoint with this novel. The characters are masterfully developed and the plot is exciting from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book.
I don't usually write reviews because I am a reader not a writer. That being said I truly enjoyed this book. I thought the narrator did the accents pretty well. I was freaked when he drew out the name Barbie, I will never hear that word again with out thinking of this novel. 2nd selectman Rennie was delightfully evil and seemed to me to sound southern somehow, hmmm. Loved the large cast of characters, lucky for me I was out sick two days from work so I got to wallow in the length of a good book. Thank you Mr. King, carry on.
I had quit reading Stephen King for several years because his novels were coming out so fast and the quality of his writing seemed to decline instead of getting better. I felt that the publishers were pulling everything he'd ever written from dusty old closets just to get one more book on the market to cash in on his name. I decided to take a chance on "Under the dome" and was so glad I did! This is classic King and I've loved every minute of it. I had a pleasant surprise when I heard references to one of my favorite characters by an entirely different author, and used accurately! I stopped my ipod and thought "did he really say ____" (don't want to kill the surprise for you!). I am in the 5th download and do not want the story to end. Will it be too far out there for some people? Probably, but I read for pure entertainment and don't get my knickers in a knot when plot lines seem implausible. Is it good entertainment? Yes! Would I recommend it? Absolutely!
Suggest that Robert listen to the book again- his "plot flaw" is specifically addressed early in the book. Sorry Robert. I am half way through the book and think it is great. However there appears to be a problems with the downloads being mis- numbered. I am sure that Audible will correct this once notified.
