Carl Hiaasen has done it over and over. A refreshingly funny look at Fishing as business. He really knows how to capture attention with the absurd. This is the kind of fun that audible was developed for.
Carl Hiaasen has quickly become one of my favorite "mystery" writers. I place it in quotes because his books are so much more. This one doesn't disappoint. Hysterical and insightful character studies without becoming charactures. Linguistically innovative. Sometimes just plain silly. But you never stop guessing what happens next and you're always surprised (if not by what, by who; if not by who, by how). A truly great read
Tucked away in the beautiful mountains of New Mexico.
...which is why I enjoyed it. The characters are unique, funny, and find themselves in some most unusual circumstances.
Don't expect anything really deep...but do be prepared to laugh.
Also, this reader is just superb!
I'm a big fan of this author and have heard most of his books, but this one is the funniest by far. It was nice and long and the characters all got such fitting endings. It's good to know that the evil will suffer, and I love Skink.
Great for commutes when you need a few laughs, this is an entertaining story with classic Hiaasen characters. George Wilson's narration is excellent--half the fun of listening to Hiaasen is in the way Wilson makes the characters come alive.
I finally got tired of all the lousy people, one after another, and the rip-offs, whores, cons and murders, which had to be particularly weird and grusome, of course. I quit partway into the second half. There were only 3 likable characters among the myriad others, and 2 of them were moderately deranged. Bleeah! I can read the news and get enough of that stuff.
Hi, I work in I.T. and am a freelance photographer. Just love this site, and always happy to discuss books, photography or just plain life. Feel free to drop me a line, I'm always looking to meet interesting people.
Yes, complex wierd funny plot, great charicters, go skink!
More twists and turns than a mountain highway.
Ouch, stop it, my stomache hurts! Great narration, felt like I was there.
Has to be Clinton Tyree aka Skink, he is impossible and querky, whats not to like!
I think this is Carl Hiaasen best most complex yet, well worth the listen, if only for the laughs!
A huge cast of characters all get their just desserts in great listen. I just love the vocalizations given to Hiaasin's books by George Wilson. Learned something about hurricanes, too.
Absolutely not.I've tried a couple of Hiassen books in the past and have managed to get thruogh them, mostly because I was on a long car ride and it helped pass the time. I downloaded this one because I wanted to listen to a Florida oriented book while driving the length of Florida recently. I couldn't even listen to more than two hours and gave up and switched on local radio. The plot is plodding, but worst is the contrived characters and the incredibly tedious digressions Hiassen makes giving us
I love this genre, but will not read, listen or recommend Hiassen. He's about the worst the genre has to offer.
Narration was fine, it was not a factor in the disappointing quality of this book.
Having read that this was supposed to be a funny book, I admit I was disappointed. What's so funny about a bunch of strange old people stranded in florida after a storm? Some may find this quirkly and amusing, I just didn't care. I deleted it, and wished I'd spent the book credit on something else.
