Stormy Weather is one of my favorite books. I was in South Florida for Hurricane Andrew, on which the book is (loosley) based.
The Narrator makes this wonderful tale nearly un-listenable. He constantly mispronounces words and names and is more monotonous and offensively dull than any other Narrator I've encountered. Please do NOT let this man read any more Audiobooks.
Captiva by Randy Wayne White. Big Trouble by Dave Barry. They're both set in South Florida and well-written with a hint of mystery and a ton of local flavor. Dave Barry, in particular, shares Hiaasen's cynical and hysterical view of the Local Hooligans.
He is bland and dull, and his CONSTANT mispronunciation of words and names is downright offensive.
None. I would add more.
After listening to and really enjoying Skinny Dip, I was excited to find Stormy Weather in a recent Audible sale. Although the story itself was interesting and ironic, the sadistic nature of the actions of the characters ruined this book for me. And this was from the "good guys." What a disappointment. The unnecessary, gratuitous violent treatment of the characters and animals finally caused me to give up 9 hours into the book.
I was disappointed with this book. I was expecting a lively romp but was bored to tears.
There were so many unpleasant characters that I normally wouldn't give 5 minutes to let alone the hours and hours spent with them in this book.
I found it very hard to concentrate on the whole book as it was way too long.
I kept reading thinking that it had to get better, more exciting or even funny but alas this was not to be.
It was not to my taste at all.
Normally, I find Hiaasen's books enjoyable. This book has all of the standard elements that usually make for an entertaining story, but this one just didn't click for me. The pace of the story was too slow, the characters lacked spark. There weren't any of the usual laugh-out-loud moments. Skip this one and try another Hiaasen book.
Again...another great book from a great author.....i always love the readings from George Wilson....go thru every book of Hiaasen.....all are pure entertainment!!!! Your audiobook credit wont be wasted!!!
I lived in Florida over 10 years and there are some aspects of Hiaasen's humor that you might not get unless you have seen some of the misuse of natual resources that are his focus. The bizzarro characters are always great comic relief for his core subject that is quite serious. He states his opinions and political beliefs in a profound and profoundly funny manner.
Carl Hiaasen's books are a pleasure to read. What tall tales he weaves and what wry characters he breeds. While they make me laugh, they also make me reflect on our purpose here on this giant marble. I want to do my part to preserve and save it for those who are worthy.
I have previously read the book in print, and really like Carl Hiaasen, so I was looking forward to the audiobook. The Narrator however is the worst ever; no inflection, no emotion, no performance, simply a blase reading of the material. If I hadn't have purchased this book as a sale item, I would have returned it, and I've never even considered returning a book before. Remember the name George Wilson, and avoid anything "performed" by him at all cost.
In every way possible. If you're looking for a book to sleep through, this is the one. Too bad since Hiaasen is normally very humurous. It was clear to me that Mr. Wilson had no interest in the book.
