I would never have chosen this book, but after listening to it I was ready for it to continue . . . I see now that Greg Mortenson's next is due out Dec 1st. I'll be in line for that one. Thanks to my friends rave review I listened and found it educational and facinating and very timely.

Although I really liked the book, I had a hard time listening to it. It is SLOW to start, and SLOW in spots. I didn't like the reader trying to talk in accents when quoting people - English, Irish, Pakistani. This is a documentary and I didn't expect theatrics. It was distracting and created dis-ease.
I enjoyed learning about the events and the outcome, but thought it could have been told in half the words.

Greg Mortensen is such an inspiration! One person CAN make a difference. Too bad our government didn't use Greg's philosophies on education in these poor nations to gain allies against Islamic extremist. I just heard that the hotel Greg often used was bombed this week and I felt as if I had personally suffered with the Pakistani people..

An enthralling book about someone who is truly doing something that makes a difference. I almost quit listening due to the overly florid writing and the totally cornball accents the reader used. I'm glad I stuck with it because I learned a great deal about a part of the world that is unknown to most of us. Greg Mortenson, his family and all the supporters of the Central Asia Institute are to be commended. I will definitely be sending some of my hard earned dollars to help build their schools. I would normally have rated this book only 3 stars because of my objections to the writing and the reader but gave it 4 because of its content.

I didn't like the narrator's voice and on long car rides, he lulled me to sleep.
but I took my ipod walking and the tale is so extraordinary, that I became completely hooked.

This book shows how one person can change the world. If we all could spend even one hundreth the amount of time and energy he has to better this world, imagine what the world would be like.

I liked how the book told not just his accomplishments and what a great man he is, but also some of his faults. The mistakes he made along the way to get to where he is now. I learned something about how and where AL-Qaeda came from.

I thought the reader did a fine job. I could keep track of the characters by the voice he used for each and understand what they were saying even with the accents used. The quality of the recording was crisp and clear. I did use the #4 quality download, maybe the few people complaning about poor quality of sound downloaded a lesser quality rated version.

Listen to this book and I think you will agree with me that it will lift you up and make you feel good about the work that some people are doing to make this world a better place.

A challenge to all the people listening to this book. Listen to it again and send the money you would have spent on the next book to Greg and see what he can do with it. I have already made my donation.

Great story but terrible narrator or audio production. My previous read was Thirteen Moons w/Will Patton and music; this book is tough to listen to.

This book has been one of the most moving episodes I have "read" in a long time. Greg Mortenson's vision of a world in which children can be educated, in which women have equal educational opportunities to men and where reason replaces destructiveness comes to life in this gripping and compelling story. Greg's respect for local customs and willingness to work with local resources needs to be a template for all foreign aid! I definitely hope that he comes to my area soon, and I will be there to hear more about his vision in person! Awesome and timely!

The crazy, amazing events of Greg Mortenson's life could only be true. I learned so much from listening to this book. The reader did a good job with a variety of accents. His good reading and the ever-surprising events of GM's life kept me listening until the final word.

I heard about this book on Yahoo. Greg Mortensen's story is nothing short of inspirational. I read it just after I finished "The Secret," which he apparently has woven into every part of his being. I have a more profound understanding about the people and their conditions in Pakistan and Afghanistan. His life work and story have provided the motivation I need to enter a new chapter in my own life.
