Had a bit of academia (which is a bit stereotyped but you probably could find some people just like this) and some interracial/class/money social conflicts. Overall a good book. The ending wasnt so concrete to me though im sure some could interpret it right off. Most of book takes place over the course of a year in the life of Jeromes family. It transitions through different family members affected by another family, the kipps. Takes place in a college town.
Overall good book, i gave 4 stars. Good reader. Slightly too long (3 less hours would have been perfect) and i did feel for the characters throughout the story line. Some of them, save for jerome and kiki, were somewhat one dimensional. So are alot of people in real life though, and maybe thats what the book is really about.
I really loved the character development and story line in this book. Beautifully written about the ups and downs, successes and heartbreaks of an educated middle-class family. I've never read anything by Zadie Smith before, but will read more.
I was anxious to get into another Zadie Smith novel. This one just did do anything for me but to wish this done. After 1/3 of part two I quit.
Personally I feel that the narrator failed miserably
White Teeth in my mind is a masterpiece all the way around.
This book is an endless litany of unlikeable, whiny characters with little redeeming value. I listened to about 17 hours of what I thought would be a good read (according to critic reviews) and found NOTHING funny or satisfying about the read. It is not sad nor did I learn anything from it. Too long, too wordy and boring.
I fund this book disappointing. The narration was good, he did a great job of the different voices. But the book was very disappointing. From the tragic professor that just can't seem to get anything together to his whole family that all has tragic flaws. Kiki was the only character that really seemed believable. I was very close to quiting the book early, and the ending was just as disappointing as the book.
I focus on fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, science, history, politics and read a lot. I try to review everything I read.
This novel was not my cup of tea. It did not completely suck, but I did not learn much and was largely unmoved while listening to it. The characters were broad and even minor characters have some development. The writing itself was not bad. Nevertheless there were just not enough sentences that were worth re-reading. Not to mention I did not much like any of the characters, even the few I did not find rather incipit.
This book is one of the most annoying I have ever listened to (or read). Essentially a very boring recreation of the liberal-conservative face off, bound loosely in some very weak character studies. Zadie Smith seems to want to show off her university education by explicating ideas that have already been beaten to death, both on college campuses and in literature. Yawn. But not just boring, more infuriating really - none of the characters are multidimensional, or even just engaging. Father having sex with a teenager, mixed race teenager discovering politics, snobby undergrad making grandiose statements, wise old woman on her death bed - please spare me. I can't understand why there is such hype about Zadie Smith, when this book is just terrible. I stuck with it to the bitter end, and was sorry. Unless you really want to hear more about how liberals and conservatives are really just a bunch of hypocrites, save your money.
I am a continuous listener of audio books and found this one to be pointless, boring and a waste of time. I pushed through it, hoping it would get better, and it never did.
I would not recommend this audiobook. It was tedious to listen to. I'm so disappointed.
To make it more enjoyable...a faster pace to the story line.
The narrator's voice did not seem to fit the telling of the story.
No, this should NOT be made into a movie.
I purchased based on the five stars review. Listened to it twice - thought I had missed something. Story wandered around with the characters and I agree with an earlier reviewer that the ending didn't really seem like an ending at all - I went back to the site thinking I had missed a download.
