My main complaint about this book is how it drug on in the first full third of the book with descriptions and back stories so random and self indulging that I skipped huge parts of the book - especially the first third of it - and that made it better. The main character was a bit strange and not as likable as he should have been. Overall, though, it is a fairly interesting story and the setting and background is quite unique.
At times he does but the author loses sight of the action of the story and the plot at times.
The narrator was quite excellent - one aspect of this book that didn't need improvement.
Yes, I would recommend. Story was very engaging, narration first rate
The unfolding of the story
Narration was excellent...brought the characters to life
This is a must read. I was truly pleased with this choice. The story introduces the reader to many exotic locales bringing them and the people who occupy the landscape to life. Characters are well developed and one comes to care about them. Mystery, love, struggle, family friction - it's all here. And the reader is perfect for this book. He brings you in and holds you. If I had a criticism, it would be that some of the medical descriptions were more than I thought was needed but it never detracted from the many positive aspects of this novel.
The language and story in this book are beautiful. Sunil Malhotra brings the characters to life with beautiful accent and oratorical style. This book is a must!
Although I felt the story moved a little slow and was a little heavy on medical terms and procedures, I did get caught up in the family drama.
I wasn't sure it would keep my attention, however, I found that it was hard for me to stop listening as I wanted to know what was next.
The narrator was excellent and I enjoyed learning more about Ethiopia.
Reader And Listener
Mine downloaded in such a way that Part 2 was below Part 1 on the i-pod (and was labeled "Part 1." Anyway, I listened to Part 3 before Part 2 and TBH it didn't really matter. For those who don't like what earlier reviewers referred to as "too much backstory," you could probably skip Part 2 altogether.
I cannot recommend this audiobook highly enough. It's beautifully written, and read with perfection. The characters are interesting and complex, the setting intriguing, and the humanity ever present. Read/listen to this book now. Don't wait!!!
Always on the lookout for my next great read!
Such a complete and wonderful story with fully developed characters who you come to know and love... Really great!
Possibly, the reader Sunil Mahotra did a spectacular job
How well the characters were developed, the interplay with the real turmoil going on in that time period.
Great listen, got a thumbs up across the board from our book club both as an audio book and a good read. I have recommended it to others.
Would go back and relisten in the future. The story was compelling but the performance was outstanding. Combined to be a 5 star entry
