If you like books that involve different cultures and world locations, you will like this book. If you love character development and historical novels you will love this book.
Skip it if you like westerns and romance novels. This is the best book I have read/listened to in close to a year (and I read a lot). The narrator did a fantastic job and the story is phenom!
As an entreprenuer, it is hard for me to shut off my brain! It is also hard for me to sit still! I love audibles! I can exercise, work on "chores" , travel and be entertained! Always looking for a good story!
A wonderful novel to hear, the narrator captured the spirit of the characters and I felt I had known each of these remarkable people! Thank you Audibles!
I have lived in Ethiopia for nearly seven years, and I listened to the book while driving through the streets of Adds each day. The book stole my heart and mind, and caused me to reflect on the beauty of life here. I'm sad it is over, and I am waiting for more.
Add my name to the list of listeners who loved this audiobook! I purchased this book based on a recommendation from a friend who read the hard cover. I was not disappointed for a second in the audiobook. The story is captivating and wonderfully read by the narrator. I could not stop listening, even when it was time to get out of the car, or get off the treadmill, or go into the office, etc. There is a reason for the high ratings given this audiobook by Audible members. Loved it!

being able to fulfill the characters dialects helps
The story..the characters ...the setting...
Everything...I listened to the book while driving. I hated it when I got to my destination as it meant that I had to stop listening to this wonderful story telling book. The characters in the book were depicted quiet well. I was sad or happy by the events in the book.
The book was suggested to me by a Co-Worker. She has never been to Ethiopia before, but she knew that I am originally from Ethiopia. I loved the book. I was surprised when I also found out that my supervisor (a gamer: World of Warcraft and a non-fiction addict) loved it. He also stated that he was sitting in his car for a good stopping point. If yo u grew up in Ethiopia, you must read Cutting for Stone. And if you did not grew up in Ethiopia, you must read Cutting for Stone. You will be absorbed by this book and will learn some things about Addis Ababa.
One of the very best audiobooks I've ever listened to. Suni Malhotra gave a brilliant performance--tone, nuance, pacing were all perfect. Some friends thought the beginning was a tad slow, but consider it a warmup--Verghese is easing you into this amazing epic.
Every time I see the cover of this wonderful book I punch myself for not having picked it up sooner. It's the kind of book you alternately refuse to put down--because you can't--and then deliberately put own, to prolong the inevitable time when the book must end. This is a bad analogy, but it's kind of like Gone With The Wind: memorable characters, romance all against the backdrop of a seismic change in history. Don't listen to me rave--download this book and let it wash over you. You won't be sorry.
My main complaint about this book is how it drug on in the first full third of the book with descriptions and back stories so random and self indulging that I skipped huge parts of the book - especially the first third of it - and that made it better. The main character was a bit strange and not as likable as he should have been. Overall, though, it is a fairly interesting story and the setting and background is quite unique.
At times he does but the author loses sight of the action of the story and the plot at times.
The narrator was quite excellent - one aspect of this book that didn't need improvement.
Yes, I would recommend. Story was very engaging, narration first rate
The unfolding of the story
Narration was excellent...brought the characters to life
