I struggled through the entire book, anticipating that it would get good and justify the high ratings from other reviewers. Sadly it never did get good, and I'm sorry I even started listening to this tedious story. The story just bogs down and keeps bogging down. The plot is pedestrian, being the diary of a life beginning in a third world country. The medical information is not particularly interesting, but it is the only interesting component of the book. The characters are simply boring and slog through life with little excitement and mystery. I don't know what planet these reviewers are on who give it five stars. It needs to be edited, abridged down to half its length, and then it would still be boring, but at least not so much a waste of time to listen to it.
For me, a total waste of a credit. Far too much medical jargon, far too little story. Very boring. Gave up after first hour.
It's a very unique, well-narrated story that could have been told in about 5 hours. I gave up on this one a dozen times. Then I'd relent and try again only to find my mind wandering during the hours and hours of useless back story. It was just too darn frustrating to stay connected to the story.
Glad to be part of the audible community and I hope that my reviews help to choose the right book and share my love of reading.
Beautifully written. The story line is different, seducing... yet... I felt that I could NEVER identify with the characters. On one hand the author went deep into their psyche, on the other hand, the reader feels left out. The book is good, but NOT as good as the book "THE HELP", and NOT as insightful for sure. Would I recommend the book. YES , if you don't know what else to read, NO, if you are frugal with your credits. Overall, the book was good, the narration was well done, sometimes I had a hard times understanding the dialect, overall, couldn't identify with all of the characters.
Wow, I can't say how bad this book is. I got this book because of the great reviews on here, but I had a really hard time getting through it. At one point, I wanted to poke out my ears because I just had enough of this sob story. It's Grey's Anatomy in Ethiopia. The love making scene just wants you to up chuck your whole meal!!!! Don't get me wrong, I love sex, but geez, how many dang words can he describe sex. The love making scenes totally grosses me out. It is so sappy. There is no point at reading this book. I should had delete it off of my player after the first 6 hours, hoping that it would get better. At one point of the book, his/her mom catching him making love by seeing his mess, he refers to knowing his "scent" after making love. He wasn't making love, but his twin brother was screwing around with the girl and his/her mom got the wrong son/boy. So, let me get this right, he knows what his twin brother's sperm smells like because they are "brothers"??? If you are reading my review, stop here and don't waste your credit(s) on this one. It was a total waste of time and I have no idea how this book got so high marks. 24 hours of pure junk in your ears. It's so bad that you cannot tune it out and think of it as background noise. If I could give it no stars, I would. 1 star is too much for this book. Poorly written and poor story. I need to take a shower to get these thoughts out of my head.
Although the story and narration is exceptional, the author dwells on all the details much too long. Its hard not to say to the author, "Get on with it". I would recommend the abridged version of this book.
I purchased this book based on the other Audible reviews, and while beautifully written this tale just couldn't keep my interest. I felt he rambled on at times, went off on tangents and my mind would wander. The hallmark of a great audiobook is when I cannot stop listening and this one took me awhile to get through.
This story line was 4 hours long and the medical jargon was 20 hours long. A very boring way around a good story. It needs a cliffs notes version!!
I enjoyed the story which was enhanced by the narrator. But I think the author needed an editor. Too much repetition, yes, yes, the co-joined twins are connected at the head. And at the heart as we learn at the rather predicable ending. Worth listening to if you like sagas.
