I purchased this after hearing so many people rave about John Hodgman and how funny he is. I guess I could have gotten more of a sample than what Audible provides. I didn't find the sample funny, but I thought it was just not a good part of the book.
Nope, it was all like that. I fail to see how such fictional subjects as omens and portents and hobo history in the U.S. is funny in any way.
I just don't get it.
I've enjoyed him on the daily show (mostly) and other places he's turned up, but this book is boring and not funny. In good comedy there must be at least a little sincerity. All the best comedians know that the ultimate joke must be on them. John Hodgeman seems more interested in feigning arrogance than actually divulging anything interesting about himself.
I can see how some people love this book, and some people hate it. You really need to appreciate John Hodgman's dry sense of humor to enjoy this book. I thought it was alright. Definitely good for a few hearty laughs. I would probably enjoy Hodgman's wit more in smaller doses, like in a weekly blog or podcast. This book couldn't keep my attention for long stretches at a time.
Boring. I was so disappointed. I have enjoyed John Hodgman's additions to the Daily Show and I expected ot find the same side-splitting satire. Nope. This is dull, dull, dull. Couldn't sit through more than 30 minutes of it. Maybe he needs a specific topic to be funny, instead of rambling from one unhumorous idea to another. I don't recommend it, unless you are suffering from insomnia.
Don't spend any money, even at the discounted price. Total nonsense. Reminds me of the musings of my two year old daughter, except she made more sence. And it upsets me that I had to give it one star just to post a review. Should be zero.
Useless book. Tries to be clever but not. Tries to speak with sophisticate - not. A waste of money to purchase. A waste of time to listen to this book. Sleeping is prefable.
Rated at one star because no lower rating appeared available.
remember high school? There was that guy who thought he was clever...but he wasn't? Well, he's back...and he's still not clever.
This book has some really funny parts, but is entirely too long. After awhile you just get bored as its the same thing over and over and over again. I didn't finish it.
I enjoy the comedy of John Hodgman quite a bit, however, I must say that this is a little too much for me. Similar to how the Austin Powers movies had some wonderful one-liners but to watch one in its entirety was too much. This is the same, Hodgman just needed to make this a bit shorter to make it better. Still, to listen to in segments, not bad at all.
