It took me a couple of weeks to read the paper back leisurely. Not so with the 7 hr audio book. Although I had read the book, I was rivetted to the audio book.
If I was to use one word to describe the experience, it would be "profound". The narrative clearly brought out the emotions. I could feel the mood as Obama intended it to convey.
The only downside, it was abridged. Skipped on some parts that I would have liked to go through again.
Two thumbs up.
Great listen if you want an honest of account of our President Elect's history. Slow moving in the beginning but it picks up and continues til the end.
This is a compelling literary effort written long before Obama’s current run to become President of the United States. It is an impressive work having a surprising candor. Well worth a listen.
I only gave it 3 stars because it's an abridged version and it sounded like it was edited at the wrong places. I may have given it 5 stars if it was unabridged.
Daily commuter relying on Audible to keep awake. I need excitement! If something crazy doesn't happen in the first 20 mins I'm done!
I was not one of the first to jump on the Obama wagon, automatically prejudiced by his name and unsure about his religious beliefs (not that I am religious myself), but when it was between him and McCain I started to listen and notice and believe that he would be a great leader and someone who could change the course of history. I downloaded this book around election time to see if there was anything in here to change my mind. The book itself was mediocre - the man is not. I appreciated learning his true background in a book written many years before his presidential campaign, which is quite different from what the McCain/Palin thumpers and those who fear change are trying to sell. It was honest and showed me that this is a real person who has achieved so much in his 40+ years and will go one to achieve so much more. I recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about our current President Elect. What a special time we are living.
Nothing I love more than a well-rounded character and intense plot.
Absolutely breathtaking journey of a search for identity amidst questions of race, heritage, and finding a place in the world. Barack completely surpassed my expectations in the poetic beauty of his storytelling. I highly recommend this book.
I would definitely recommend this audiobook to all my friends. It reveals a side of Barak Obama that I never would have imagined existed. His personal narration makes it so real.
I really enjoyed hearing about Barak Obama's relationship with is maternal grandparents.
The fact that the book was narrated by Barack Obama added so much depth to its overall presentation.
I would have loved to listen to this book in one sitting. Although not action packed, there was never a dull moment.
This really shows the President as a real person. I wish everyone in Congress would listen to this audiobook and be able to see the President in the context of his ordinary life.
Since it's nonfiction I wouldn't call anyone a "character" but it was nice to learn about Barack's siblings I had not known anything about.
Talk about performance! Barack does a really convincing Kenyan accent when quoting his relatives not to mention he works in some phrases we've never heard uttered by a president before!
"Learn the truth"
Please consider listening to this book. It's very worthwhile.
Interesting story that also provides great insight into the current president. He is an excellent reader and mimic. Great fun.
I read the book four years ago. It's one of those books that you think about long after finishing, then pick up and read again. Except, this time I'm listening to it. Having it read to me by the author is even more riveting, and I'm picking up parts that I couldn't fully recall when I first read it. I'd give it six stars if I could.
