I'm in love with this book. I have read this book and wanted to listen to it a year later. It is beautifully written in such a way that it captures you. You feel the pain and love. The narrator is brilliant on this piece. He tell it in such a way that is magical and sad... So sad. Please read. I have listened to this book five times now.
There are book you like. There are books you love. But, there are very rarely books that transform you (and even fewer that are all three types of books)! The Book Thief, is one of those incredibly rare books that is the total package. I will forever carry this story with me just as Death does!!
I loved this book when I read it - I bought copies for my friends and family. Listening to it was another story - the reader was fine and of course it was the same story. I think it was just one of those books to be read and not listened too.
I had to read this book for a summer reading assignment, was not too excited for it because it looked not as appealing as it was, I was wrong and the book was astonishing. Wonderful literature, and very interesting. I recommend.
Amazing. Absolutely amazing. This book transports you to a time and place you're not sure you want to be but you're sure you don't want to leave. The characters make you want to know everything about them. They make you want to shake them, hug them, run with them and love them.
Reviewing only the audiobook.
The narrator is rather inappropriate. That just ruined it for me and I wasn't able to finish listening. One of the reviewers said he sounds like Vincent Price, and I have to agree. Sadly that kind of gruesome and intense narration doesn't work with this particular book. I guess the narrator was trying to impersonate Death as one would do so telling a scary story to children. For me it just didn't seem serious/adult enough. I was under the impression that Count Dracula is narrating.
Definitely pick this book up in print.
