Compellingly Thought Provoking

It's a tearjerker but also brought quite a few smiles.. What a horrible time in history. And a viewpoint that hasn't been beaten to death.
I first began listening to the book while driving and had difficulty staying focused on the book. Perhaps it was the drab tone of death. My mind kept wandering. About two-thirds into the book, I made the decision to start over and listen at home. I'm glad I did. It was a wonderful book and I found myself doing menial tasks just so that I could keep listening.
The characters were deeply developed and the story line was engaging. It was an informative and rich work of historical fiction.
It was not similar to but was as engaging as The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
The title character.
Moments such as the softening of the mother, the change in the mayor's wife, the devotion of the father – all were moving moments. It was particularly emotional when the book thief again lost her family.
This isn't an over-powering story. It isn't a world changing story. But it also isn't a formula, stock standard story. It's sort of a fairy tale set in a war zone, a fairy tale about regular people in extraordinary circumstances. Narrated by Death, nice touch there. And the writing isn't the typical modern formula either. There are many places where the author's use of words are so unique it caught me off guard, and made me stop and think. Instead of the typical descriptions of the sky or the cold or a feeling, they were unexpected and rich. I want to listen again and pay better attention as I'm sure there are more that I missed while I was following the story. This is the kind of book your high school literature teacher would have loved and the kids would have hated (remember Tess?). Given I'm long past high school and much wiser, I appreciated and enjoyed the craftsmanship. I'm sure I will listen to this over and over and recommend to friends. Once again, thanks Audible!

just loved this story and allan corduner made it great!!!!!
Not my usual genre but this was a phenomenal book and it was even better to listen to due to the excellent narrator and the characters are phenomenonal. First time I've ever heard a story told by the Grim Reaper who apparently has a sense of humor.
Yes, better than the print edition, thanks to the SUPERB reading by Allan Corduner.
Rosa, the mother. A gruff exterior and a heart of gold.
The interchanges with Rudy.
The entire book was moving.
I have listened to more than 50 audio books, and The Book Thief is by far the best. Excellent writing, compelling story and outstanding narration.
I love reading books. When driving or doing chores I love listening to books on Audible.
I just finished The Book Thief. This is the first book that I can truly say needs to be heard. If you have the choice of reading it yourself or listening to Allan Corduner, choose listen. You see, the book is a story narrated by a charming character named Death. The Audible experience makes the story so alive.
This book was such a great story...I love when I finish a book and I wonder if it will be a movie. This book was one....not knowing that it was! I will seek out the movie reviews. The details and complexitys in this book are what makes it so great....It made me feel the full gamut of emotions. Sometimes I did have to rewind to understand a word due to the dialect.....but minor stuff. I do have to admit that at the very beginning I was struggling with the story line and was unsure if I would continue....am I glad I did. I got angry with the mother quite a few times- she seemed so "hard".....but then others not so and I did grow to like her. All in all I loved all the characters.....!
There was so much to this entire story- the characters, the war- love, hate, triumph. I do have to say though that it left me needing to give a rest to stories about the holocaust, and the history on our various wars.....I typically love non fiction and have grown to really like a good fiction book interwoven with true detail.....This book is one to not miss.
