Harbinger of Books
Wonderful story with fantastic characterization and dialogue. The narrator is amazing I think he captured the essence of the characters really well.
Definitely because the Narrator did such a wonderful job and the story was so interesting!!!
When the character Mouse was first introduced into the story in Easy's house! The narrator did a great job with the voices.
Don't really have one. I enjoyed them all!
Mouse, because the things that he would say and do with no remorse.
Great narrator!! I hope he narrates all of the Easy Rawlings books! I listened to this story in a day and a half! Just great!! The story is wonderful as well!! I'm sad that I'm just hearing this story!!!
A great Audio Book. It's one that you keep listening to at every opportunity you can find. It's well read and takes you on a journey your glad you only have to read about. And it's a journey you know others may have lived in that time. I must admit I was a little unsure about choosing this story as its far removed from anything I know. But I'm glad I did and I am sure I will listen to it again on a road trip sometime soon!
I really enjoyed the story development, the attention to detail and powerful narration. This captured an intimacy and honesty that I don't find in many books. Best of all I just wanted to keep listening because I needed to know what happened next.
I would recommend this book because it is well-written and centered in the African American community which is a perspective not covered enough.
The plot was unpredictable and engaging, keeping us interested and eager to hear what came next. It was more violent than we expected and seemed more realistic in some ways, not your usual "turn the bad guys in to the authorities" ending.
Good dialect work. Easy to listen to.
We listen as we drive across country so we listen to one or two books in each direction from California to Illinois. We definitely wanted to return to the book when we were comfortably on our way.
I didn't know what to expect, but decided to try out a new author and the book was great. The glimpse into that time period was alive with compelling characters and a great narrative that keeps you on the case right up to the last minute. I can't wait to get the next one!
This is a well-written, suspenseful mystery read by a brilliant actor. The voices of the characters are delivered with distinct and appropriate intonations.
I have read all Walter Mosely's books. I love his ability to bring his characters, their lives and especially Their LA neighborhoods alive. While telling a human story, Mosley is educating his readers about the real story....racism in America.
My problem was that the narrator couldn't do the same. For me, the power and charm of Mosley's book is lost... And that is really too bad.
FORTY SOMETHING THUG FOR HIRE WHO ENJOYS A GOOD BOOK.
I READ WALTER MOSELY'S DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS SOME YEARS AGO, AND HAD FOUND IT TO BE A FRESH TAKE ON THE CHANDLER/HAMMETT SCHOOL OF PRIVATE EYE FICTION. THE CHARACTER OF EASY RAWLINS SLIPS RIGHT INTO MARLOW'S GUMSHOES, AND SEES THE SAME POST WAR L.A. FROM AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SET OF EYES. THIS L.A. IS FULL OF THE KIND OF PREJUDICE AND HATE THAT MAKES THESE MEAN STREETS SIMMER TO THE POINT OF VIOLENCE BOILING OVER, TAKING THE LIVES OF BOTH THE INNOCENT AND THE GUILTY. ALL THE TOUGH GUY PATOIS IS HERE, BUT NONE OF IT IS CLICHED. THESE ARE THREE DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERS WITH LIVES TO LIVE OUT; THAT SOME OF THOSE LIVES ARE ENDED IN SUDDEN VIOLENCE JUST ADDS TO THE REALISM. THIS IS THE FIRST OF MOSELY'S EASY RAWLINS MYSTERIES, AND MAY BE HIS FINEST. THIS ONE HAS IT ALL.
IF YOU'VE READ DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS BEFORE, OR IF YOU ARE A NEW COMER, I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS AUDIBLE AFFERING. THE NARRATOR BRINGS DEPTH TO HIS PERFORMNCE OF EASY RAWLINS, AND DOESN'T OVER ACT THE HARDBOILED NUANCES, BUT RATHER LETS THEM COOK LIKE AN EGG IN A BATH OF HOT WATER. TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN....
This story is pretty convoluted. There are a lot of twists and turns in the story line which made it a little hard to follow and even harder to believe. I found it a little violent for my taste. There seemed to be a lot of killing that didn't make much sense.
