I'm open to any book as long as it is true to itself.
The period feel was great. I have never read about a black private detective and really liked his world-view, his take on everything. The writer does a fantastic job of describing his post-war experiences of racism. I liked Easy and I loved the story too. Highly recommend this.
Say something about yourself!
I would be hard pressed to recommend this book to anyone, especially a friend. While the story line holds promise in the beginning, it quickly loses it's pazazz.
Probably not. With a little bit of tweeking, this book would have been interesting. It just doesn't make the cut in its published form. Close but no cigar.
Boatman performed fine. So, I don't have any suggestion for improvement.
I'm not a lazy reader so this book held minimal value for me. By that I mean, there is no challenge to the story. It's supposed to be a mystery and it starts off well, then the writer wanders off course and never recaptures the reader. So, I couldn't stand to sit through anymore gibberish in a follow-up book.
Great story. Really different from the movie but still extremely engaging. I recommend this book for everyone.
Harbinger of Books
Wonderful story with fantastic characterization and dialogue. The narrator is amazing I think he captured the essence of the characters really well.
Definitely because the Narrator did such a wonderful job and the story was so interesting!!!
When the character Mouse was first introduced into the story in Easy's house! The narrator did a great job with the voices.
Don't really have one. I enjoyed them all!
Mouse, because the things that he would say and do with no remorse.
Great narrator!! I hope he narrates all of the Easy Rawlings books! I listened to this story in a day and a half! Just great!! The story is wonderful as well!! I'm sad that I'm just hearing this story!!!
A great Audio Book. It's one that you keep listening to at every opportunity you can find. It's well read and takes you on a journey your glad you only have to read about. And it's a journey you know others may have lived in that time. I must admit I was a little unsure about choosing this story as its far removed from anything I know. But I'm glad I did and I am sure I will listen to it again on a road trip sometime soon!
I really enjoyed the story development, the attention to detail and powerful narration. This captured an intimacy and honesty that I don't find in many books. Best of all I just wanted to keep listening because I needed to know what happened next.
I would recommend this book because it is well-written and centered in the African American community which is a perspective not covered enough.
The plot was unpredictable and engaging, keeping us interested and eager to hear what came next. It was more violent than we expected and seemed more realistic in some ways, not your usual "turn the bad guys in to the authorities" ending.
Good dialect work. Easy to listen to.
We listen as we drive across country so we listen to one or two books in each direction from California to Illinois. We definitely wanted to return to the book when we were comfortably on our way.
