I read the hard copies of the entire series years ago, then listened to them on cassettes or CDs more than once, and now am listening again on my iPod. James Herriot's stories are laugh-out-loud funny at times, heartbreaking at others, and wise without ever being preachy or sentimental. Mr. Herriot (Wight) was a humble, generous human being and gifted writer. His wonderful stories are timeless. Download this book- you will be so glad you did.
I read this series many years ago and enjoyed them so much. I was concerned that the story would lose something without my mind filling in its own blanks for voice inflection and dynamics. I have been very pleasantly surprised by Christopher Timothy's interpretation. He has added so much to the story. I shudder to think that I almost decided not to redo this as an audio file.
An easy 5 stars!
Growing up in England, surrounded by amazing literature, I was devastated when my eyesight made reading difficult. Audible is truly a gift.
Great Read! It's easy to just listen and immerse yourself into a simpler time and place. All time classic!
This book really touched me. I highly recommend it.The narrator is excellent also.It should be listed as one of the Audible Essentials.
This is my third time purchasing it and reading it over the past 30 years. I have the books, the tapes and the DVD and now for my Ipad. I listen to the stories daily. A few minutes or even an hour. I love every minute I spend with these stories. I laugh, I cry and I learn. You won't be sorry for purchasing any of James Herriot's stories.
I read this as a teen and loved it. Now, listening as an adult, it was just like revisiting an old friend. Christopher Timothy does a super job reading and bringing James Herriot's words to life. I will be buying the rest of the series.
I was first exposed to All Creatures as a child when my mother used to read us chapters in the car. Since then I have all the books in the series over and over again and they never lose their charm. James Herriot tells about his life experiences as a vet with great feeling, understanding and humor. I love the fact that each chapter is a complete story and that there's a thread that connects all the stories together throughout the book.
This audible version is perfect. There's a British narrator who does a variety of very believable 'hills' accents and he emphasizes all the right words. I found myself laughing and crying with the characters, just like I do every time I read the books.
This is a definite good read/listen for any animal lovers out there.
When I was younger, my Dad used to read James Harriot stories to me before bed time. Christopher Timothy does an excellent job of recapturing some of those memories.
I love this book and the choice of narrator was fortunate, since he played JH in the television version as well. I won't gush on about the greatness of the book or the reader though, since others have done that. Let me just note that there is one oddity in the file. At 5:27:07 - 5:27:39 of the second part, there is a bit that audible.com forgot to delete, announcing that "This is the end of side 20 ..." If you couldn't already tell by the acceptable but not stellar audio quality, this audiobook was re-recorded from a cassette tape source.
