This book made me love it's main character so much, and the performance is wonderful. I really enjoyed it. The music was a bit jarring because it happened so randomly, but I really loved the performance and writing. A simple and pleasant book.
I love the way the characters are brought to life. It is as if we have known for them personally. Descriptions of the countryside are so extremely vivid that we can picture it in our minds!! Wonderful book & I LOVE the narrator!!!
This is one of my most reread and beloved books of my life. Having Christopher Timothy, the actor who played James Herriot in the BBC series, the reader, made listening to it sublime.
The narrator made the characters come alive. I felt like I was right there experiencing the whole story. It's also family friendly. Huge bonus points for that.
His life is a constant comedy of errors! It makes my life feel somewhat normal compared to the things he went through. My favorite characters are Siegfried and Tristan. The voices he gives to these men....It's hard to explain, but his narration puts you right in the thick of it and you can just tell when something crazy is going to happen, like when 'patient Siegfried' makes an appearance. You'll be giggling and wondering how any of them survived.
I don't believe I have listened to this narrator before. I can tell you that this is one of my all time favorite narrators and books. I enjoy the different dialects he gives to the characters. It's amazing how he does it, but that separates him as a cut above most narrators. I will be seeing what other work he has done and seek those books out.
I was constantly laughing!
I love this book. My kids (14, 9, 8) love this book. They can't wait to get into the car and hear the Vet story. It can be a little gory at times, but that makes it all the more real. He doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the difficulties of being a veterinarian.
Delightful escape from the unpleasant realities of our current world turmoil. Don't look for profound in depth pontificating and angst. This is a lighthearted series of farm related vignettes as seen through the eyes of a local veterinarian in rural England during the 1930s.
I enjoyed listening to this book has a backdrop to puttering around the house. It wasn't so absorbing that it took all my attention. However some of the chapter seem to drone on and on about incidents that we're not particularly interesting. Others were very sweet and enjoyable.
I remember watching the television show all Creatures Great and Small with my grandmother when I was a little girl. This book evokes all the wonderful imagery and delightful stories I remember watching with her. Plus there are some new stories that I don't remember. I would highly recommend this book it is a timeless classic.
