I chose this book that I've read in the past because I needed something to lift my mood and it did not disappoint.
There are very odd musical interludes, sometimes falling in the middle of a paragraph, but other than that this was thoroughly enjoyable. The Yorkshire accent is amusing and I can only assume it is accurate.
Series of short Stories, of the life of a country veterinarian living and working in the Yorkshire Dales, in Northern England (think crisp, cold and picturesque farm country) around the time of the Second World War.
The stories are charming tales of farming life and values through the eyes of the optimistic Scottish veterinarian outsider. He takes the only job available to him, and through his many adventures with both people and animals, makes this place his home.
Through the short stories we learn about life; universal values of kindness, optimism, sharing, and caring and very hard work. We watch a young bachelor find his place and begin his family in this enchanting land.
I am a "very progressive business woman" living in Los Angeles, Ca. and truly love the stories for their warmth and straight forward, yet beautifully descriptive writing style.
A complete treasure! I recommend the book and the series.
What a treasure this audio book is. A masterpiece of story telling expertly matched with a first rate narrator.
I didn't know what to expect when I decided to give this book a try, but wow, was I ever pleasantly surprised! More than just about animals, this is a glimpse into what is becoming the distant past, told with a style that will draw you in and make you yearn to visit the landscape so expertly presented.
Go ahead an take the plunge. Give this book a try. You'll be glad you did.
He does a great job of bringing the stories to life.
I read all of these as a child, and am enjoying re-hearing them now.
This is my favorite story of all times.
I love the excitement and the fun written into it. I love listening to this book at nighttime before I go to bed. I want to be a veterinarian when I am older so this is an amazing story to show me all the different types of animals. I love this book
Before the unmemorable cluttered the shelves with stories of themselves, James Herriot penned this thoughtful memoir of his life as a country vet in Yorkshire.
His observations of the strength of character of the farmers reflect a respect for their character as well as the land they farmed.
