The story is intriguing and the characters draw you in.
There are many memorable moments, but I think Phillip at the end when he brings the mob together and finally defeats his enemies is a great moment and really gives a picture to what brings about a martyr in society.
John Lee always does an amazing job and this performance was just as great!
I would have loved to, but it is far too long, which is a good thing!
Ken Follett is an amazing story teller and John Lee does a great job of reading his books! I can't wait to listen to World Without End.
This story didn't seem like 40 hours. I loved every minute. I felt I could understand each social class and how they lived in the 12th century. I felt the passion and life's difficulties of the people surrounded by the common goal of building the cathedral.
I loved listen to John Lee. It is amazing how he can individualize each charater for an epic tale of this length and variety of characters.
I didn't expect to feel the profound sense of awe for Tom the Builder's dedication and courage through a lifetime of adversity.
I was skeptical at first whether I would like this book. An architect building a cathredal? Didn't sound like my type of book. BUT....I LOVED it! The characters are so wonderfully developed that you can't help but get immersed in this epic tale. One of my favorites of all time...A must listen. You wont be disappointed. This is a fantastic tale!
Good story, keeps your attention - great for commuting in the car as the book is so darn loooonnnngggg!
I am so glad I made this selection. Ken Follett is now one of my favorite authors. I love his flow in his writing. This is a great story that is told in a brilliant way and John Lee is to be commended on his narration. I would greatly encourage you not to overlook this book thinking that it is about cathedarls and monks or even religion. It is about life and its strugles and it triumphs. It is about persisting in the face of opposition and finding a way to press forward when the wind has been knocked out of you. This is a great book! However, I must warn you it can lead to a lack of sleep it is hard to stop once you began.
This is by far my favorite Ken Follett book, made even better by my all-time favorite narrator, John Lee. Even though it's a long book, I didn't want it to end. I don't usually listen to audiobooks more than once, but for this one I will make an exception (and that's really saying something since the book is over 40 hours long!)
The characters are so well developed, that I did not find it confusing when he added more and more people to the long list of events. The publisher's summary describes it as Ken Follett's historical masterpiece, and I couldn't agree more.
I love historical fiction, and this book is at the top of my list. They could not have found a better narrator then John Lee to bring it to life. This audiobook should come with a warning: "Although you'll be tempted, don't try to listen to the entire book at once!"

Pillars is the kind of book that gets you completely involved in the story and the characters. Creative writing...characters you can relate to, like or hate. I'd seen parts of the series a couple years ago and this is SO much more than I expected. I guess that old cliche that the book is always better than the movie is alive and well.
This is one of the best credits you'll ever spend. Over forty hours of great storytelling and you won't want it to end. The characters are so well developed you feel like you know them and their journey becomes your journey. Ken Follett has also crafted some incredible villians in this story that will have you yelling out loud at your audio book. You won't regret buying this book. John Lee delivers this story brilliantly!
Best one yet
This seems like a long book - a big investment in time but you will not regret this purchase. I was sorry it ended.
John Lee's performance adds a great deal to the story.
This was my first Ken Follett novel and it won't be my last. I love the narration of John Lee. He makes the characters so visible in your mind along with the authors way of creating them. I've already started "World Without End" Great story telling, which is why I love to listen to books.
