I am a high school English teacher who loves to listen to books almost as much as reading them.
This classic take of love and self-discovery jumps off the page because Dee gives each character a unique voice, with vocal inflections that capture every moment beautifully. As a lover of Hurston's novel for many years, I had decided to listen to the work this time around rather than simply read it once again. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Dee's reading of the work perfected the text. Simply lovely.
All of them - that's the thing that is so great.
would like to.
I read this book in school and it did nothing for me - I didn't have the experience or the ear for the dialect to understand the subtleties. Ruby Dee made it real.
The story was poetically written, such great writing. I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks and have come to realize how the narrator's performance can make or break a book. I can't imagine anyone else reading this book-the story and the performance were meant for one another!
I love to read mysteries, histories, biographies, humor, and Jane Austen.
I read 'Their Eyes Were Watching God" many years ago. I enjoyed it, though I found the conversations written in dialect hard to understand. Thank goodness for this audiobook! Ruby Dee's reading is exquisite. Through her performance, I can hear the beauty, the rhythm, the music of the language. It's a wonderful story, wonderfully written and wonderfully performed. This is my favorite audiobook so far - and that is saying a lot. Strongly, strongly recommended.
I loved the narration done by Ruby Dee. She was simply wonderful, seasoned in her craft. She distinguished the characters and I loved how the meshed with the era
The closest I could associate would be the Twelve Tribes of Hattie.
I loved the men playing cards and horsing around. Ruby did such a great job with the voices, I felt as though I was right there watching and listening trying to understand what the men were saying.
The end with Teacake's death, that touched me deeply. Janie went through so much but she had true love when she met Teacake and he loved his Janie. Janie did not laugh until she met Teacake. .
When I saw that Ruby Dee was the narrator, I said I just had to listen to this. I was pleasantly thrilled. She was such an artist and a professional. She connected you with each character and made you become a part of them. A narrator can make or break a book and Ms. Dee as always rose to the occasion. Hats off to you Ms. Dee!
I've had the audio, narrated by Ruby Dee, in my Audible library for some time. I tried to listen to it before, but initially found the speed of speech and regional patois difficult to follow. I recently gave it another, and longer chance. I'm glad I did. This book is considered a classic for good reason. Ruby Dee's narration is full of feeling and a great match for this novel.
Tell us about yourself! An absolute book lover! Busy!!Listening to books on CD/digital so I can get more in. So many books; so little time!
I love this book and I have listened to the audio version, read by Ruby Dee, on CD. I bought this on Audible because I want to own it and listen to it again. Ruby Dee does and incredible job with the dialect, the emotions, the voices, the rhythm of the prose and the passion of this book.
Well, Janie would be my favorite character for sure; and I think Ruby Dee does a tremendous job protraying her.
Would love to but probably will never be able to.
Saw the movie, (in which Rubie Dee had a part). It was good, well-perfomed, but like a lot of books made into movies, it lost a lot in the editing that brought it to the screen in a movie of reasonable length. What's good though is that parts of the book are read verbatim for narration of the movie, and this at least that gives the movie a touch of the genius of Zora Neale Hurston's poetic prose.
Audible is the soundtrack to my busy, city-walking life!
The display of humanity and true love.
EXCELLENT!! She totally brought the feelings and mood of the story to life.
Great, great read (listen)!!
