Just Me..Dee.. A day without reading or laughter is grey...
What a wonderful treat to myself. Zora being read to me by Ruby Dee. Simply amazing performance. I will be listening to this again.
Not as engaging as one would hope, for an ALL TIME 100 books listee, however, Ruby Dee does an excellent job of giving the characters color.
The voice actor brought this story to life for me. If I read this on my own I would not have enjoyed the story out understood the attitudes, emotions, or nuances of the characters.
Deep sigh of awe and anguish. Zora Neale Hurston chose the most luminous words to string together with her Master's hands into a necklace worn with grace and transcendent power by Ruby Dee. I didn't think it was possible to improve on these words, but hearing them spoken with such fierce, gravelly surrender byRuby Dee took my experience of re-reading my favorite book to a whole new level. My hope is that by now you've abandoned this review and are halfway through the first chapter.... If not, get on it!
The story of growing up in Florida during slavery and after slavery. Life for black women were tough and freedom from slavery of all kinds. The three marriage reveal the struggle for freedom and respect from bondage of all types relationships. True love is hard to achieve but can be found through persistence and struggle.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this story! The author really captures the reader with vivid and descriptive settings, dialects to match the time period and a wonderful story that shows that it's never too late for love and a little true love can last a life time. I've read this book multiple times and loved hearing the talented Ruby D. narrate.
