I am not a horse racing fan but this story is so well written that it keeps you listening. If the movie is anything like the book, it will definitely win some awards.
Seabiscuit was a terrific story about a horse, its owner, rider and trainer. The story gave the listener a great view into the machinations of horse racing, as well as into the lives of the characters that love the sport.
I haven't read the book because I was waiting for the Audio Book, but now that I see it is abridged I will wait for a non-abridged edition. My wife read the book and it was one of her favorites of all time, so I guess if I can't LISTEN to the whole book I will have to READ it. I agree with the reviewer that said the book lost a lot in it's present audible version. That's why I make it a point not to order abridged books. If authors wanted their material cut in half they would have written half.
The best so far, narration was wonderful, just as if you were at the Kentucky Derby. Story was told very well, recommended audiobook for horse lovers and others in between. Great for young adults also, would love for my teenage granddaughter to read
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and don't understand how anyone could give it less than 4 stars. If you are interested in horses and horse-racing, or even against-all-odds stories then this will not disappoint. I really feel like I was transported way back to the Depression era of racing, though I'm only 31 years young!!! Amazing book.
Learned to love audiobooks when I was commuting two to three hour a day. I still love listening to a good book, even when I prefer a printed version.
I resisted this book for a long time as the topic didn't interest me. Once I started it, though, it grabbed me and I couldn't stop listening. Hillebrand is an excellent writer; she strings together the story from several viewpoints without tangling them, and builds up each incident to the most suspenseful peak before revealing its denouement. The story of horse and men (owner, trainer and jockey) would capture the reader's heart, even in the hands of a lesser writer. But I'm very happy to report that the story of independent, courageous, glorious Seabiscuit and the people who loved and trained him found its way into the hands of a writer who could make it soar. The narrator submerges his personality totally to the benefit of the story, so you sometimes are startled to realize that you're not really watching the story unfold, but hearing it read to you. All in all, a seamlessly written, engrossing listen.
I LOVE BOOKS! I have a service business (large salon). 'What are you reading' is heard all day everyday.
Our entire family enjoyed this book and audio. Richly written, well documented and highly entertaining. The authors work has paid off handsomely with a fantastic story. The narration is impeccable. Kudos to all involved.
A truly wonderful story that deserves listening to over and over. The triumphant perseverance of that little horse had me cheering in the car as I was swept away to that time. The fact that it is a true story makes it even more compelling.
