Audible has changed my life! Dry , itchy eyes were destroying one of my greatest pleasures - reading. Now I am experiencing books again!
Elizabeth Peters is a wonder! I have read all the Amelia Peabody series and didn't think I could love them more. Then along came Audible and Barbara Rosenblat. Even better than print! I listen to these over and over. The key is Amelia; she is the perfect heroine -- strong, funny, opinionated and full of heart. In this first volume, the reader is hooked by the end of the first chapter and anxious to return to Amelia, Emerson, and Egypt for the whole series! Can't say enough about this listening experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I laughed outloud several times, prompting my husband to look at me like I was crazy. Amelia is the most endearing woman. I feel like the Emersons are part of my family now.
Mystery reader (especially series) and Austen lover
The Amelia Peabody books have long been my favorite lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek novels, and Barbara Rosenblat is one of my favorite narrators. This first book of the series, which introduces Amelia and her decided feminist ideas (in Victorian-era England and Egypt), along with her absolute inability to see that others might not agree with her views, gives Rosenblat many opportunities for tongue-in-cheek, ironic performance. In this book, Amelia, newly wealthy and independent, goes to Egypt to become an Egyptologist. There she meets Emerson, they have many great adventures and fall in love. Hard to describe other than as a romp, full of humor and adventure.
I hesitated to buy this audio since I had read the book several times, but I found it well worth the listening, making me laugh out loud often.
I love clean books of all sorts. Love mysteries, fantasies epic to kids stories, fairy tales, romances, humor, and historical fiction
This is the first book in a series that I love! I have never read the books and have only listened to Amelia Peabody rise off the page in her amazing adventures. I am the stay-at-home mom of several children with disabilities and these books have helped me keep my sense of humor and my sanity. Cooking and cleaning are not so dull when I can push a button and be at Amelia's side in Egypt exploring the perils and pitfalls of the tombs. I love the characters, the plots and the machinations of Amelia as she works with her "councils of war" to solve the mysteries. Her machinations and the interplay of the characters only get better in future books. Two is not my favorite, but I won't miss any of them. With the addition of a handsome rogue of a villain and a small addition in the "brother of demons" this series is almost complete. They also deliciously satisfy the hopeless romantic in me, with their modest, English reserve. I don't have to worry about what my children will hear. You have to listen to these books. Barbara Rosenblat is my all-time favorite female narrator. She does an exquisite job. I never have to wonder who says what. I'm so pleased to own this excellent audio book for my very own.
Barbara Rosenblatt does a wonderful job narrating the part of Amelia Peabody. The book is somewhat predictable, but the story is SO wonderful and fun it pulls you along through the end. I also loved the characters' full development especially that of Amelia. A great listen!
This is the second book in this series that I have listened to and found it to be very similar to the first.
I found the story and archaelogical references interesting.
As other reviewers have said it was somewhat predictable but in my opinion this made it a comfortable read, like putting on a favourite pair of slippers.
The 19th century English used by Amelia is quaint and a little annoying at times but it became more familiar as the book went on.
The narrator became a little distracted a couple of times confusing her voices. Background noise was distracting for the listener on more than one occasion also. I found her extremely 'proper' accent became a little irritating at times. This may be misleading though as, on the whole, she did a very good job of it.
The author successfully blends the plot with humour, wit, mystery and suspense. All in all an enjoyable book.
Appealing and believable characters (especially the heroine), interesting background (ancient Egypt as seen from the 1880s), and a bequiling plot. Excellent narrator! Overall, a very nice package.
I have loved Amelia Peabody since I first met her many years ago in the pages of this book. Barbara Rosenblat brings this fictional woman to life so vividly. The mystery, history, and fun of 19th-century Egyptology is as fresh now as it was when the book was first published. Elizabeth Peters never disappoints the reader. She uses her extensive education in history (a Ph.D. in Egyptology, in fact) to take the reader back to the adventures of discovering tombs and temples during the heyday of excavations. I highly recommend this book, this series, and this narrator.
I got this book on sale a while back and just got around to listening to it. I am not a huge fan of books set in the past but there was something about this book. . . Amelia Peabody is a lot like Gail Carriger's Alexia Tarabotti. This is not like the Tarabotti books. Not steampunk. No werewolves or vampires to be found. However, the heroines in both series are so much alike that one can't help but draw parallels. The recording is old and at one point you can hear A LOT of background noises (they eventually go away). It's not awful, but it does take away from the story a bit- not so much that I won't listen to it again, just a little disconcerting. Rosenblat is awesomely dry and British sounding. I will be getting the next in the series for sure.
I love Mysteries. May be something I picked as a child listening to Ellery Queen.
Yes. Very interesting characters. Author make you have feelings for each one, good or bad. Listening to it again my feeling change some.
Set back in period time makes be feel I am part of a Christie Caper.
Narrator gives each part of a character, the feeling you could see the performance in your head.
Yes I started listening to it at night. Love to hear someone read to me. Would stay up because story and delivery was Great. Kept me on the edge of the bed as it were. Love that the characters continue on in future books. Am a real Amelia Peacock fan now!
Thank you keep them coming.
