Retired former magazine editor who is working harder than ever as Mr. Dad to his 14-year-old daughter.
When I read all the glowing reviews for this novel, I expected that it was a result of readers jumping on the bandwagon and praising a book only because others had. Then I listened to it and climbed aboard. I, like Mikael Blomkvist, had trouble keeping up with all the members of the Vanger family. I also had some difficulty recognizing and recalling names and places that were Swedish words and/or pronunciations. I got by those challenges and was throughly engrossed by Larsson's story. The characters were simply marvelous and Larsson had a way of making unusual events seem believable. The mystery itself is not that hard to figure it out. The fun is trying to determine how it will unravel. I am hopeful that Audible gets the sequels to this story very soon. The 16+ hours shot by. I wanted more. An excellent listen.
I was hesitant about this book but decided to listen to it based on the reviews. The first two hours concerned me because the character development was slow but then after that it took off and I thought it was an excellent mystery. The narrator was fabulous, one of the best I've ever heard, crystal clear and good inflection. I will get the other two when they eventually come out on audible.
I have become so tired of the same ol' sociopaths/pathology gore/old boys' squadrooms and guns, guns, guns. Here the characters are interesting, plot complex and writing intriguing enough to keep me up at night and get me looking forward to the next book. I recommend it for anyone looking for something a bit different
It's always a bit disturbing to read comments about books which the reviewers didn't actually listen to. In the case of this highly compelling, intelligently written novel, some just didn't like a character or two, or didn't like the theme, or the slow unveiling of the plot. Why give a low rating to a book you didn't actually listen to? I'd have a lot more respect for their opinions if they'd actually had the patience to complete the novel.
On the other hand, many of us found ourselves unable to turn off our iPods, drawn in by the terrific character development, the descriptions, the realistically portrayed situations. I am anxious for the sequel, coming soon.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, from beginning to end. The last two hours of the book are not quite as convincing as the other hours, but did not diminish my overall satisfaction with this book!
The reader was incredibly talented, and convincing as all the different characters.
This book started off very slow, and I thought that I was not going to continue listening. However, about a quarter way through I found myself engrossed in it. I loved the characters, especially Lizbeth, I loved her grit. I recommend this book, am glad I did not give up.
What a great suprise, if you can get thru the first 45 minutes, and keep track of the characters, and their Swedish names you will be rewarded with a great story with: mystery, murder, a wealthy complex dsyfunctional family, and intriguing smart lead characters interaction. If you are looking for a quick read..don't get this one...it needs to be savored
This is my favorite audiobook to date, combining great book + great narration. The characters are complex and interesting, the plot is compelling, and the mystery gripping. I've already listened to it twice.
The narration is excellent, a British take on the different Swedish accents, including non-annoying nuances for characters' varying genders, ages, and social classes.
One word of advice: the first section is hard to follow. Mentally skim this part, especially when he explains the lawsuit against the protagonist, which is unnecessarily detailed. Hang in there and you will be rewarded!
Amazing book, amazing narrator. A great way to spend 15 hours of your life. Just be willing to let the story happen as it does. Definitely an adult book; could be disturbing to some individuals: but oh, what a ride.
Dept Q, Harry Hole... where are you?
No matter what you think of this first book, rest assured the next two make it even better! What I loved most about each book as well as the trilogy itself was how thoroughly the author completed the victories of his heroes and demise of each villain. I loved all its characters. I still cant quit listening to it!
