I picked up this title knowing nothing about Steig Larrson and desperately needing a new author. I'm so sad that this is his first novel! I'm already on the waiting list for his 2nd book, due out in the summer "The Girl Who Played With Fire"
This novel is colorful and vibrant with excellent characterization. There are very few "tells" that this is a new novelist and the story overpowers them easily.
Not only is the story compelling, but the narrator is exceptional. His tone and characterization are perfect and his pronunciation of the Swedish phrases cannot be faulted.
This is the first audiobook I have ever purchased that I've listened to twice - not only that, but I only bought it 3 weeks ago!! Buy it - you won't regret one minute of listening. The only downside is that, like me, you'll have to wait anxiously for the release of his second novel!
Once you get past the Swedish names and geography, the story moves along and comes alive. It was great reading a book written for a culture with different social norms. I think that is one reason this book is such a good read. Since this is the first of three books, and the other two are already written, it makes you want to learn Swedish so you don't have to wait another year to learn how the story ends.
I think this book just moved into my all time favorite audiobook position. I enjoyed it thoroughly and was sad when it ended.
I loved this book down to the very last second. The narration was perfect, the story spellbinding, and the characters wonderfully flawed.
The author did an excellent job keeping several events going on simultaneously while keeping you involved and anxiously waiting for what was coming next. I appreciate a book that is unpredictable and spell binding.
this book is a little hard to get into at the beginning, but as soon as you've established all the characters in the book, it's very easy to follow. I think all the swedish names were throwing me off that's why. It's also very graphic, in terms of the imagery that popped up in my head when listening to this, i don't know what that says about me. Although I have not finished the audio yet (one more hour to go) this is a very good listen.
Excellent narrator. I was so disappointed in the ending until I read that it is a trilogy. Can't wait until the next book. (One of the reviewers listed the names of the characters. It really helped. Thank you for that list!) Very interesting twists and a good listen.
Engaging story, especially early on, but then descends into an unnecessary amount of violence against women (what percentage of women mentioned in the book are victims of violence?) and a truly bad ending. Its a little like the author likes causing the girl the book is named for unhappiness without a point to it!
