A total eye opener . Great listen and a great read too a must read you will not regret it.
"A great surprise"
I wasnt sure what to expect and it wasnt a history of science. I loved how this story developed and how many of the characters i remembered from my school day science - but in a much more interesting way. The fascination of the author is clear throughout, although I wish Bill Bailey had been the narrator as well as I think he would have added an extra level of humour. Overall however this was fascinating and a great journey. It is probably time for a second book though - i chuckled as i listened to him describing the vastness of space an how inaccessible Pluto is - just as the news was telling me about the first pictures from the rocket that has journeyed there! How quickly our life can change with science!
"A proper soultion to the UK motorway system"
What a wonderful way to be guided through the world of scientific discovery. Interest awaits around every corner as physics, biology and chemistry unravel in a light yet clear manner to reward the listener with a new perspective and understanding of what used to be an overwhelming mountain of dry fact.
I found myself enthused and wish I had heard this 30 years ago when I was at school.
Put this on in the car and be the only one to be smiling sat in the next traffic jam...
"A short review of nearly my favourite book"
I've listened to this repeatedly - there's always more to learn that I missed the last time
The narrator's "Performance" matched the tone of the book and was clear and easy to listen to
"Comprehensive without losing focus"
Dabbles through history providing interesting facts which keep you engaged without being overwhelming. Thoroughly recommended.
"This is an endlessly fascinating read/listen."
In an entertaining way, this brilliant book makes the deepest & most profound secrets of the World/Universe understandable.
"love this book"
Ive read this book several times and feel it works best as an audio book. being able to listen while walking or gardening then stopping to ponder some thought provoking nugget is great. My one criticism is that it really needs updating as some areas such as cosmology have moved on quite a lot since the book was first written.
"In Short, this History Covers Everything"
What a very enjoyable book. It covered so many topics that I had never studied before and many too that our education systems attempt to teach but rarely in such an interesting way.
Bill Bryson's wit shines through as clearly as his scholarship and William Roberts' narration was such a joy and had me chuckling happily to myself on numerous occasions.
If you want to know more about the world we live in and where it and we have come from it's all here!
a truly brilliant audio book. the author takes you a a journey of a truly cosmic scale with plenty of wit and humour thrown in. the narrators voice is awesome and conveys the ideas in the book in a nuanced and entertaining way .
"Brilliant book but terrible narration"
Bryson is one of my favourite authors and this is an excellent audio book when read by Bryson.
This version has someone else reading and I had to concentrate so hard to be able to absorb a simple sentence. I fortunately have it on disk with Bryson reading so will have to import that.
