This was an excellent book. Sometimes we tend to forget how nasty race relations were in the past. This book is a cold reminder of how shameful our (whites) attitudes and actions were not too many years ago. I know we still don't live in a perfect world, but it's good to take a look back that we will continue to strive for a better society. It was well done and the readers were excellent.
At the top of my list of annoyances in life is spending good money on a book that I end up not enjoying. This means I spend a lot of time agonizing over the books I do download, reading reviews and surfing the net for top 10 books lists.
Help was a good one that kept me listening. The main characters are well rounded and believable. The multiple narrators helped to keep the women's stories apart, and told a riveting tale of three women who's lives became intertwined during a turbulent time. The story takes place in the early days of the Civil Rights movement and involve three brave women, one white and two blacks, who, despite grave danger to themselves, come together to do their part in helping to right the wrongs infliced upon black domestics by their white employers.
A good book, worth the download!
Listening to this book was definitely a high point of my summer. I was drawn in by compelling, identifiable characters that I wanted to learn more about.
Some books amuse, others inform. But every once in a while you come across a book that gets inside you, picks you up, and then sets you down in a different place. This is that kind of book. It will get you thinking about human relations--not just race or class relations--for a long time. The characters are complex, the plot is terrific, and the narration of this audiobook is superb.
I had to actually buy the hardback to give to my daughter.. I was born in 1955 and I remember having black Help and babysitters in Atlanta. My wonderful Grandmother had her ideas and my mother balked and taught me different. This book took me home and I wish I could go back and make the changes that needed to be done. Loved it. Will listen again and again.
An entertaining story full of history and emotion, this book kept me listening. Great narration, colorful characters, I found myself looking forward to my workouts because of this book. Bravo!
I got completely lost in this book on my commute for work. I even drove around on my lunch hour just so I could hear more!
I loved this book and the characters so much that when it ended I wanted to know what became of them...it was that real! Problem is...now I don't know what to listen to next, I can't imagine anything being as rewarding.
The three talented narrators really make this book. Their distinct voices make it very clear whose story is being told. To me The Help is perfect for an audiobook - interesting story, well-written, but not so crazily complex that I need to rewind if I miss a little detail. And I escaped into that world when I listened. Loved it.
