This is one of my favorite works of fiction. The fact that it deals with the difficult issue of segregation and what amounted to "slavery" and abuse of the negroes working for the white families in the south, makes it something we should hear. It is told from various perspectives in different chapters, a delightful technique.
These readers are truly gifted actors with great accents and natural use of the vernacular. They make it the best listen I've ever heard. I will recommend this book on tape to all my friends.
I loved this book and highly recommend it. I found it compelling and the audio added a wonderful dimension to the enjoyment. I did not want to finish it and missed the characters when I did. Excellent!
I had a high school composition teacher who remarked that books are friends. Take a friend off the shelf when you need it and it will be with you always. This one made me remember that idea. I felt like I was among friends. I got to know the characters, loved the use of different narrators. It gave such a good perspective of the struggles and stupidity of the times. I got ticked off at the caucasian housewives with their ignorance and how they were just like sheep; had no brains for themselves...just flocked. I admire the courage of the women in spite of the risks. We witnessed Skeeter mature and maybe times change a little. Great book...pretty long, but you don't want it to end.
I work in sales for a cellphone company and so obviously love technology. I couldn't function without my Audible apps on my phones!!
Everyone should experience this novel. The narration is phenomenal, the three women really bring the characters to life. By far the best, most inspirational book I have enjoyed all year!
I was a teenager during the 60's and this book helped me understand the many different angles to civil rights. The narrative was spot on and helped me feel each charactors fear and triumph. Great listen!!!
I loved this book!!! Having multiple narrators worked extremely well - it gave me a better picture of the characters. And the book itself - wow! I'm from NYC and came of age in the 60s. I never witnessed theses types of actions personally, but I know they existed. We can never forget that this happened and how terrible an era in our history this was...
I was delighted all the way through this book. The characters and the voices that portray them ring true, the story is heartening and satisfying without being treakly or smarmy. I loved it!
