The story was excellent. It captured the angst, fear, and hatred as well as the bravery and love that was such a big part of 1960's Mississippi. It was an emotional roller-coaster. I laughed out-loud and cried along with the characters. The reading was also excellent. It was like listening to a play. I would DEFINITELY recommend it.
I have difficulty finding interesting books that my 11 year-old can listen to as well. This book was very entertaining and a great history lesson for her at the same time. We loved it!
I loved this book. The characters are well developed and the readers are great. It examines women of the South in the early 60's from two different perspectives - the maids and their employers. It brings in the historical climate of the time without getting bogged down in historical facts. I expect to revisit this book for another listen in the future.
This is one of my first downloads. I didn't want this one to end. The narration was wonderful too. You will not be disappointed with this one! I'm looking forward to Kathryn Stockett's next novel.
I enjoyed this book so much, I didn't want it to end. The narrators were perfect! Very enjoyable to listen to. Only the ending was left open. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
Each of the characters was distinguished from the others through description and the fabulous reading. By the end of the book, I felt that I was closing a portion of my own life. The message that I got from the book was that small gestures of understanding can heal each of us.
...for writing one of the finest novels I have had the opportunity to read/hear.
This book may very well become an important contribution to American literature. Congratulations!!
The narration was excellent, the story was always keeping me in suspense. There were times I felt embarassed to be a white woman. A wonderful story of secret friendships and fighting for whats right!
This first time novelist has hit a home run with this book... the narrators of the book on the audible version just enrich this already fabulous book. The women in the book are from all walks of life and give everyone a taste of life in the deep south in early 1960s.
A well written story that examines a topic that is at first, painful, but then peals off many layers to show the complex and conflicting relationships among these women. It is also witty and charming. The narration is the best I have ever heard. Once I got into the story, I could not stop listening. Compelling.
