This was a great book. I found myself wondering what everyone was up to and how their lives turned out weeks after reading it. I had to remind myself it was a book--not real. The narrators were so good I have searched out more books read by them.
This book has received high ratings from most reviewers and deserves them. It makes a perfect audible selection as it is a great story with wonderful naration. The thought provoking plot and sub plots are mixed with just the right amount of humor.
Great listen. Having several narrators reading it made the story come to life. I found myself laughing aloud. I couldn't wait to listen to some more, plus it's a story that needs to be listen to more often. I will listen to this one again.
This most compelling story drew me in deeply and brought me back to the other historical fiction and biographies I read about the Civil Rights movement. There is a distinct difference between reading the text (which I did in the bookstore to see the spellings of the characters' names) and hearing the narration. The individual narrators helped immerse me into the story and their accents and emphatic phrasing during tense moments of the story were wonderful. Well worth the listen.
I really enjoyed the novel as well as the performances, which brought the finely developed characters to life. I got close to the end of the novel just before I was supposed to leave for a party--I almost wanted to stay home to listen to the ending instead!
From page one, I was drawn into this story. I felt welcomed to Aibileen's table, rooted for Ms. Skeeter to find her voice, and chuckled at Minny's antics. Lots of themes developed here; the issues of race and prejudice, friendships, mother-daughter relationships, social expectations, etc. This story speaks of strength and weakness and how both characteristics coexist within us all. I miss listening to these literary friends of mine.
I usually listen to thrillers and mysteries, but this, this is so unbelievably great! The story is compelling, I have to force myself to take off my earphones and wait for my next two mile hike. I just don't want it to end, but I can't wait to find out how it ends...I am almost there, don't have much more left. The readers are absolutely superb, they have the dialect down pat. Don't hesitate, download this book!!!!!
This was my second audible book and I enjoyed it very much. Being from Canada, I can't imagine what life was like in Jackson - however the story telling from the four actresses who read this book bring it to life. Very interesting and thought-provoking listen for those interested in historical fiction!
