First off, let me say that I buy this book again. That said, there were way too many "give me a break" moments in this book. First off the premise that all takes place in two days is unbelievable and really not important to the plot. Then there are the miraculous escapes from a multitude of situations that require items (i:e explosive chord) that simply materialize in their back pack, an item that also simply materializes. One escaped from prison with only the clothes on his back, the other enters the country disguised as a man carrying only an empty guitar case . . . so where'd they get the fake blood packets? Too many James Bond moments as convenient resolves to impossible situations.
The story line could have been a bit easier to follow had the narrator been better.
The characters were fairly well developed
Not very good
I'm a private investor with an affinity for a good spy story, mystery, or thriller. WWII Biography or History also appeals greatly.
The plot was a little predictable and the characters were neither interesting nor believable. I found it a struggle to just finish the thing and only came back to it if I was working out and had nothing else on my phone at the time.
He did what he could with the material he had to work wih. The characters and the plot had very little nuance.....he was probably as bored as I was.
I wouldn't cut anything specific. Rather, I would send the whole thing back and ask for a lot more character development focusing on making them more human, more believable, less like bad TV characters from a show like 24. Ditto for the plot. Rewrite!
The name is for my wife, the photo is for the old man.
I think this was a serious attempt at an action spy novel. The problem is, the critical actions read like a spoof. I'll make up a analogous example: you are being shot at, so you defend yourself by pickup up a sledgehammer and knock down a load bearing wall, and the resulting collapse of the building spares you, but kills your attacker. That's very close to one of numerous incredible moments which ruin the otherwise decent writing in this book. I found myself regretting that the writer didn't give me more of the nonsense, and make it into an over-the-top spoof.
This is a pretty good story. It moves quickly and has some nice plot twists. I know lots of people are happy with this sort of book. The writing is comic book style. The dialogue and description are very weak. The characters are barely developed. If you like action movies, you will probably like this book.
Lover of good ideas
Gayle Lynds keeps you guessing throughout this well told spy thriller. You can't ever be sure you know which side the characters are on or where the story will take a new twist. A well developed plot, excellent character development. A must read for those who like spy thrillers.
Perhaps a very good book of this type, however it is fairly complicated for one planning on listening to it in numerous short periods of time.
A little way into the second audio part of this book, I gave up. It became so contrived, with so many unbelievable story elements, I just couldn't listen anymore. Afterwards I realized that I had had the same experience with The Coil by the same author, but unfortunately I didn't recognize the author's name when I ordered this book.
