I downloaded this book for shear curiosity. I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained by the book and also by the amazing job of the narrator Katherine Kellgren. She is amazing and totally brings the book to life. Of all the audio books I have downloaded this book and the other books in the Bloody Jack series have been the best. I have been listening to all the Bloody Jack books and have loved them all so far, I am in the middle of the 3rd book now and am looking forward to hearing the rest. Great job.
What a fabulous series of books, I really enjoyed Bloody Jack...but that is just the beginning...Curse of the Blue Tattoo is also good...but it REALLY gets going with Under the Jolly Roger...I laughed...so loud...my husband kept coming in the room to see what I was doing...
Where have these books been, and why havent I heard of them before??? This should be a HUGE series with lots of followers...there is stuff for everyone in these pages...now granted...my favorite character is not Jacky, that is not what snared me into the series, it is all of the people around her...they are the ones to follow...I could not wait for the 9th book to come out on audible...I had to buy the hardcover version...
I highly recommend these books for anyone who enjoys YA.
Plot, coming of age in a strange world, history.
The characters came alive. Katherine Kellgren just became one of my
The story itself is rather interesting, and I love the narrator;however, I was a bit disappointed in some of the content (men trying to force themselves on the main character). It was supposed to be for young adults and that kind of shocked me when I began listening to it.
Bloody Jack had me hooked within minutes. The story is delightful and I can't wait to listen to the second book. I felt like I was right there with the orphans, scrapping for a living. And I felt like I was in the basket with Jackie as she drifted over the Caribbean with a tree hanging below. I could just about taste the coconut stew she made on the island. "But don't eat the turtles." Fun! Katherine Kellgren's narration is masterful. I loved the Irish brogue she gave Liam, and how she changed the voice of Jamie as he matured.
Counselor with eclectic taste, I enjoy all types of fiction, dark, strange and twisted things, humor and explicitly.
the narration was a hoot. Recommended for those who want some good clan fun...and a little blimey
The book was captivating with interesting detail about sailing that showed that there was a lot of research that went into the writing of this book. This is a book that I would be comfortable having my 9 year old daughter listen to (even though I might have to explain buggery..). I like how the book addresses the issue of being a girl in this time (late 1700's) and gender bias. The narrator has a wonderful voice, both speaking and singing, and effortlessly switches between male and female voices. There are poetic quotes included in the story which I love as well as historical reference (for example Napolean and the French Blockade etc.).
The printed books are outstanding, and somehow Katherine Kellgren makes them even better in her reading. Few books offer this much adventure, especially for girls. The entire series is a must for young (above 12 unless you want to have to explain things) and old. This is a series I will have waiting for my granddaughter when she getting older.
