I truly recommend this book especially for those whom have never used a budget or spending plan to manage their personal finances. Even if you do or have used a budget you can benefit from this book. Especially if you are not planning beyond a year. My wife and I have been using a budget for over 13 years but not doing very well at long range planning. This audio book helped us get focussed where we had not before.
the optimistic one
I'm about half way through this book and had to come and check the other reviews to be sure it wasn't just me! I picked this audio book because of the high opinion of a few friends and coworkers who are Dave Ramsey fanatics. Thought it would be a good educational listen...as I could certainly stand some financial advice in life. Well, I think I'm not broke and in need of self punishment enough to appreciate his tone. This guy really sounds angry and condescending and it's making it very hard to listen to the book! He would have done well to have someone else read it. The saving grace is that I got it on the free trial, so I didn't actually pay money to have someone talk to me like an idiot and a brat. Now, I will say that some will not have any issue with this. If you are a Christian who enjoys in your face harsh and yelly kind of preaching, this book won't strike you as offensive.
Oh yeah, the content??? Well, the verdict is still out on that. So far, nothing new or Earth shattering but maybe that'll be in the last half. I am using it more motivationally (if he weren't sounding like a jerk in how he talks to and about people) to remind me to do the things I already know and make the sacrifices I'm already aware of...BUT maybe his tone and cash only admonishments are just the combo that some folks might need to push them out of their rut. But I do recommend you check out his website or a podcast or something before buying this audio book. If he encourages you online, then his audiobook might very well do the same.
Dave Ramsey argues saving money and investing for long term returns in this book. Most of the saving methods point to reasons why and how one can do without credit and sticking with a cash-based way of life in saving and spending. Dave Ramsey's concept of a total money makeover will be full of things that you do not want to hear or would turn a tone deaf ear to, however it is logical and real.
Are your credit card bills piling up? Are debt collectors calling you non-stop? If so, then don't call one of the bankruptcy attorneys or debt consolidators you see on the late-night TV commercials. Instead, listen to "The Total Money Makeover".
This book was truly life-changing for my wife and I. We've alway been what I would have considered financially stable with decent jobs, but no matter what it always seemed like we were living paycheck-to-paycheck, and we never seemed to make a dent in our debts. The Total Money Makeover really turned the light on for me. Dave Ramsey's approach to money management is simple and fool-proof, but it does take time and discipline.
After reading the book, my wife and I decided to take his Financial Peace University course. It really got down the nuts and bolts of the concepts outlined in The Total Money Makeover, and I would highly recommend it as well. It's been almost two years now since I first listened to The Total Money Makeover, but since then my wife and I have stopped using credit, we've paid off a significant portion of our debt, and we've also built up a nice emergency fund to fall back on.
Some of Dave's advice is right on (i.e. debt reduction psychology don't buy new cars) other things I would argue like don't wait until 60 to buy long term care! By then 40% are uninsurable and the cost is much more, don’t make this mistake it will cost you! The 40yr old pays less in lifetime premium. If you need LTC (50% chance you will) the rest of your money makeover was in vain.
I'd have liked a little more info on making a budget, but a good, solid book.
It gave me some motivation to sort out my money, and while I'm not in such a bad financial situation, it convinced me to "clean up" a little, pay off debts and start and emergency fund.
I`ve read many books on personal finances and this one has concepts anybody can use. I recomend reading it with your spouse if you are married to get the most out of the book.
Good recepie for getting ouut of debt. Not an instant remedy as it`s more focussed on cahnging your habits to get lasting results.
This book is an awesome read. Are you in need of a "straight to the point" and a "no non-sense book", for your financial outlook then this is the book for you. Ramsey has some really good points in all factors of your financial requirements.
Dave Ramsey's radio program is regularly heard in our home, as for more than 2 years now we've been fans.
Evenso, this is the first time I've ever "read" his book. Since we have young kids who are close in age, reading an entire actual paper book cover to cover that's longer than 3 chapters is pretty rare in our home.
Audible's price and delivery are perfect for our budget and schedule.
I've listened to the Total Money Makeover book now 3 full times within the past 48 hours.
The financial wisdom -- from a Biblical perspective -- that Dave Ramsey provides is priceless and worth much more money and time that we've spent on it.
So grateful to know about and have access to this awesome resource.
I now call myself an intense gazelle. I am escaping the credit/debt cheetah (cheater). No longer will we allow our family to be cheated out of it's wealth. We are determined to leave an inheritance for our kids and grandkids one day.
