This clasic christmas carol, has been thrilling people for over a century. And it is surely, a masterpiece of a fairytale. The story of the old greedy mr. Scrooge who gets a visit from three spirits. is surely a carol that will never die and never grow to old to read.
I found this version of "A Christmas Carol" to be very well done. The reader breaths life into the sometimes meandering prose of Dickens. Also, I found that this well-done classic really helped me get into the Christmas spirit this season. My small children did find it a bit difficult to listen to in the car. But that is more the fault of Dicken's writing style than the reader's. I have recommended this version to all my friends for next Christmas!
I have heard half a dozen readings of A Christmas Carol by different people. Neil Gaiman for the New York Public Library, Tim Curry for Audible, my own dad for a few years but the Jim Dale reading is so right and so rich that I have lost my ability to hear this story told by others without comparing the performance to Dale's.
It is not the character voices that sell it but the deft handling of Dickens' occasional literary flourishes and the bringing to life of flat metaphors or turns of phrase that are easily missed or quickly passed over in favor of more active passages.
I am glad to yearly let this ghostly little book haunt my house pleasantly and smile with each listen.

I've listened to Jim Dale's rendition of "A Christmas Carol" countless times since it was first published. His awesome voice brings a unique sound to each character, Ebeneezer Scrooge in particular. This is a flawless production that should be high on the listening list of any Dickens fan.
This is my favorite book and Jim Dale brings it to life. The movies do not get the story or the characters right.
I purchased this book because I love the story. It's tradition to watch and read a Christmas Carol every December. When I saw that Jim Dale was narrating this book I got all excited because his narration in the Harry Potter Series was phenomenal (a all time favorite).
I was disappointed though. Not because I thought Jim Dale did a poor job, as a matter a fact he's still superb I'm my book. My problem was the character voices given and Jim's style. All I could hear were the characters from the Harry Potter Series. Scrooges voice sounded like Sirius Black and others could easily be compared to other characters from the Harry Potter Series.
I would've given more stars but I just couldn't get past the narration. I'm sorry Jim Dale, I love you and your work but this just didn't work.
Every year I reread A Christmas Carol. This year Jim Dale read it to me. He was spot on with his tone and cadence in the telling and true to the author's description of the voices of the different characters.
I think Charles Dickens would be very, very pleased.
