Ellen needs an audience or you need to read this book to yourself. This book is written and delivered like a stand up act but it's got no energy because there is no audience. This book is one of those books you need to read, not have read to you.
Although sometimes a little befuddling, with stories just strange enough to be fiction but not so strange that you can be sure, Ellen's book (a group of essays) is always amusing and sometimes laugh out loud funny. For anyone who enjoys Ellen's comedy, this is definitely worth a listen.
Just as another reviewer noted, this book started out strong, then faded off near the end. The last chapter or so did not fulfil the promise of the earlier chapters.
It may have been a rehash of older material - I can't comment on that for certain - but there were parts where I did laugh, and laugh loudly. Good comedy can be enjoyed on repeat visits.
I was especially glad, however, that I chose the audio version of this book over the print edition. The author (naturally) had just the right pace, inflection, and tone to enhance the story. I don't know if my own reading would have had the same comic delivery and timing.
Ths book is not great literature, but was a worthy listen during my commute. It didn't require much concentration, but provided a welcome change from the talk radio guys.
I only gave it a one star rating because this form will not permit a 0 star rating. This book is simply terrible! Just a bunch of drivel about her and none of funny or worth repeating. If there was a way to get a refund - I'd do it.
Say something about yourself!
Ellen did not put a lot of work into this book. She mostly rambles about daily life and her own house. This is not really a comedy routine, but a new revenue generator.
How disappointing! I am such a fan of Ellen but I didn't find this book funny at all. Never even finished it. Now, I'm wiser and listen to the samples before buying just because I like the author.
I love this Audiobook. I laughed so hard. I listen to it over and over and has become my montra. I always floss. I have even shared it with my 10 year old. Lots of good advice.
After purchasing the two David Sedaris audios and being so happy, I had been looking for something equally hilarious. I really had hopes for this audiobook based on the preview clip and the fact that I like Ellen, but was seriously disappointed. There were a few amusing moments followed by 3+ hours of unfunny, monotone, meanderings. Spend your money on something else.
