Resumen del Editor

“Amazing…I was completely surprised by the ending of this beautifully told and written book.”—Reese Witherspoon

“A triumph of historical fiction” (The Washington Post), an instant New York Times bestseller, and a Reese’s Book Club pick, set in 1950s Philadelphia and Washington, DC, that explores what it means to be a woman and a mother, and how much one is willing to sacrifice to achieve her greatest goal.

1950s Philadelphia: fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed on to her like a birthright.

Eleanor Quarles arrives in Washington, DC, with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t let just anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for. But having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.

With their stories colliding in the most unexpected of ways, Ruby and Eleanor will both make decisions that shape the trajectory of their lives.

Another fabulous book by Sadeqa Johnson

Wonderful storyline — I liked that it wasn’t super obvious initially how the two stories would intersect.

Easy read that speaks to many issues people of color still face today and issues that everyone, regardless of race or economic status, encounters. Tough choices, terrible parents/in laws and how to grow through it all.

I particularly loved the reference to characters from her first book Yellow Wife. Absolutely masterful.

Nice historical fiction story that is relatable

I enjoyed this book. I felt some parts were a little slow but it came together nicely. The story highlights different aspects of American life not just Black America but America as a whole. It is about upward mobility, sacrifice, and hard choices that women and even families face. I like how the author tied it into the previous book without being considered a sequel and or being heavy-handed in the references. I hope Sedeqa Johnson keeps writing books for us that are not only relatable and don't just highlight hardship but bring resilience of women to light.

She Did It Again

Sadeqa Has Done it Again!!! This Book was beautifully authentically interestingly amazingly written. She gave us intellect, courage, and femininity. While also giving us the raw and uncut experience of colored women/people during that time! I truly felt both characters pain and infatuation in their relationships. The colorism battles were important to showcase, and bears much truth in our history. I hope this author keeps up the outstanding refreshing work while inspiring a new generation of Black Fiction writers! This could easily be a movie!!

This book is absolutely lovely!

This is my first time reading this author and she is absolutely terrific. I didn’t know what to expect from this book because it’s definitely a slow burn. But it is definitely a slow burn.
