Resumen del Editor

Shortlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize

From the author of Skippy Dies comes Paul Murray's The Bee Sting, an irresistibly funny, wise, and thought-provoking tour de force about family, fortune, and the struggle to be a good person when the world is falling apart.

The Barnes family is in trouble. Dickie’s once-lucrative car business is going under—but Dickie is spending his days in the woods, building an apocalypse-proof bunker with a renegade handyman. His wife, Imelda, is selling off her jewelry on eBay and half-heartedly dodging the attention of fast-talking cattle farmer Big Mike, while their teenage daughter, Cass, formerly top of her class, seems determined to binge drink her way through her final exams. As for twelve-year-old PJ, he’s on the brink of running away.

If you wanted to change this story, how far back would you have to go? To the infamous bee sting that ruined Imelda’s wedding day? To the car crash one year before Cass was born? All the way back to Dickie at ten years old, standing in the summer garden with his father, learning how to be a real man?

The Bee Sting, Paul Murray’s exuberantly entertaining new novel, is a tour de force: a portrait of postcrash Ireland, a tragicomic family saga, and a dazzling story about the struggle to be good at the end of the world.

Epic story with characters you’ll care about

The writing is so detailed and smooth. Each character has their own performer and the performances are so good, you can tell who it is by the voices. I had read many good reviews of this book, so I selected it. There are uncomfortable parts that may make you feel like stopping or reading ahead. Don’t miss any of the great writing and development. This book will win awards and they will be deserved. For me, it ticked all boxes. It was thrilling, engaging, personal, and real. I would listen a second time. I would buy a hard copy and read for a second experience. If you liked Birnam Wood or The List, this could appeal.

author didn't write an end

is this a new trend? I just watched a movie last night that did the same thing - strung me along for hours and then left me hanging.
if you like to make up your own ending, go ahead and immerse yourself in this book which has flashes of brilliance, a lot of drama, but just ends at the most exciting part when you are finally engaged and wanting to know what happens. it isn't set up for a sequel - you are literally 99.9 percent through the story and then it just ends.
very disappointing.

Depressing

Drawn out story for a simple, sad message. Good character development but a very singular message.

No ending

The story I didn't want to end and it didn't. No ending was the best ending. Depressing at times but great story and memorable characters. The destructive consequences of doing the right thing.

Stunning

This is one of those books that comes along once in a decade. You try not to give most books 5 stars because are they really that good? Probably not. But with this book there is no question, no other decision to be made. This is as good as any novel can get. It’s like To Kill A Mockingbird , Bonfire of the Vanities, Catcher in the Rye, Catch 22, or 1984. It’s phenomenal. It may take several years for word to get out, but almost everyone is going to read this book and be enthralled by it. It’s a masterpiece. I loved this audio version.. There are multiple actors voicing each member of the family and one other character. It’s brilliant. I have a problem with the ending but I’ll save that discussion for another place.

Great story line, but…..

On the edge of my seat…What happens next??? Need to know who, what, when and where the story ends.

Not humorous

A well written book but hard sad read. The characters wallow in their problems. Stressful to read.

Too depressing, couldn't finish

I hate not to finish a book, but I just couldn't make myself do it. It is a good story and very well written. No complaints about the narrators either. But there is no counterbalance to the heavy, depressing content.

Well done, a little…over serious for me today, but well done.

Characters were well-developed with each their own congruent and eclectic voice; my favorite part is the development of relationships in hard circumstances. I was a little thrown off by the combination of a review that said it was hilarious and the reference to “Skippy Dies” which was hilarious and potently serious at the same time - my sides hurt on that one. This was a different kettle of fish and I would have enjoyed it more if I’d thought of it as interesting characters and relationships dealing with tragedies of the unfortunately every day sort.

Paul Murray has created characters and imagery that resound in one’s very soul.

There is nothing about this novel that I disliked. I want to jump up and down and cry out to the gods in gratitude for Paul Murray who gave us this masterpiece. Listening to his words and soaking in the atmosphere is transporting oneself into the lives of his complex characters and the world surrounding them. I am going to go back and listen again to the many breathtaking mind paintings he has created here. My next listen will be another book by Murray. There are three but Audible is missing one in their selection so, hopefully, they’ll soon offer it in their catalog. Bravo, Mr. Merry, The Bee Sting is a true classic.
