Romilda Gelardi viene alla luce in una notte di tormenta, mentre la neve cade fitta sui boschi delle Madonie. Nel caldo della loro casa, Maricchia e Alfonso si illuminano davanti al miracolo di quella figlia femmina tanto desiderata, bella e polposa come una spiga di grano a giugno. Romilda si rivela subito una bambina speciale, capace di stabilire un dialogo istintivo con cose e persone. Ancora non parla, e già ottiene il rispetto dei fratelli maggiori e quello della natura intorno a sé: è con sgomento che Maricchia, dopo averla lasciata sola pochi istanti, la trova ricoperta da un nugolo di api nere che la proteggono e la cullano con il loro ronzio. Ed è con altrettanto sgomento, misto a fierezza, che suo padre Alfonso si rende conto che, di tutti i figli, forse solo Romilda ha le capacità per ereditare i segreti del suo mestiere.
Sì, perché Alfonso è un mannaluoro: uno dei pochissimi depositari dell'arte di estrarre dai frassini, muddii in dialetto siciliano, la manna, sostanza dalle miracolose virtù nutritive e curative. La manna è la linfa dei muddii, che si cristallizza in cannoli bianchi dolcissimi e preziosi: ma essa si produce solo in condizioni molto speciali, incidendo la corteccia nel momento incantato in cui gli alberi mormorano nella notte e si offrono docili alle mani sapienti di chi li ferisce.
Romilda cresce così tra gli insegnamenti della madre, che attraverso la cura delle api le insegna la dolcezza e il potere, e quelli del padre, che conosce la natura e sa che dolcezza e potere possono essere distruttivi se non li si controlla. Ma Romilda è destinata a incontrare presto la violenza del ferro e la prepotenza del fuoco: don Francesco, barone di Ventimiglia, la chiede in sposa ancora bambina. Seguire don Francesco significherà lasciare il bosco, conoscere le durezze di una vita più agiata ma profondamente inautentica, in cui anche l'esperienza della maternità può finire per espropriare una donna di se stessa. E mentre la Sicilia viene investita dal vento che scuote la penisola intera in lotta per l'unità nazionale, anche per questi due sposi si compie un cammino di sofferenza e di prova: le loro nature opposte si incontrano e si scontrano, si forgiano tra le fiamme della passione e nel gelo di un silenzio sempre più profondo.
Alfonso insegnava che ogni pianta fruttifica con straordinaria generosità quando viene privata del nutrimento: guidata da questa fiducia più forte di tutto, Romilda sopporterà il patimento più duro in attesa dei fiori maturi di una consapevolezza nuova. Quella di una donna, intelligente e dolce, forte e appassionata: manna e miele, ferro e fuoco. Dopo "Il conto delle minne", Giuseppina Torregrossa torna ai temi che le sono visceralmente cari: la sua terra e la femminilità. Una Sicilia nobile e feroce, terra di pazzi e sognatori, di aranceti e solfatare, è il palcoscenico sul quale si muovono personaggi memorabili, sul quale grandezza e miseria delle umane passioni prendono vita nel canto di una donna alla ricerca della propria libertà.
