Historia
On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather’s car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror.

American Ripper is the true story of Gerard John Schaefer, a Florida law enforcement officer who was a prolific serial killer in the late 1960s early 1970s. The decade that was thought to be filled with love, peace, and happiness became a new dark age, breeding more serial killers than any other time in US history including Charles Manson, the Zodiac Killer, the Son of Sam, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy, who was held in the same prison as Schaefer and whom he both idolized and resented for the recognition his crimes brought him, a recognition Schaefer never received.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Resumen del Editor
Warning: This audiobook describes several crime scenes that are graphic in nature and may be very disturbing to some people. Do not proceed if under the age of 18 or are disturbed by scenes of death and violence.
One after another, young women disappeared without a trace in the night. One by one, their brutalized bodies turned up, the macabre crime scenes suggesting they shared the same cruel fate. Abducted, bound, and raped, all fell prey to an unknown killer; all became the victims of a deadly deception.

These days, no one in America feels immune to violence. But now, in this extraordinary, groundbreaking book, the nation's leading expert on predicting violent behavior unlocks the puzzle of human violence and shows that, like every creature on earth, we have within us the ability to predict the harm others might do us and get out of its way. Contrary to popular myth, human violence almost always has a discernible motive and is preceded by clear warning signs.

Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach.

Difficult to listen to.
The narration is bizarre. I have never heard anybody read this way. The pauses between words are painfully annoying. The story itself is okay but I do not recommend.

It's OK
This is definitely a lower tier of audiobook, so set your expectations low.
There isn't much of a story here, there isn't a lot of build up, there isn't a lot of insight (I don't actually want insight in books on real events as the story should give you insight, but in this case the story didn't do much, and there wasn't anything really extra).
If you're from the Tampa Bay area it's interesting to hear the locations since you might know where everything is happening, but the overall lack of detail or storyline or setting the scene means you don't really get much in terms of extras. Part of the reason you don't get much in terms of extra is the fairly short length which is under 4-hours.
That isn't to say the book has no value. While the book really isn't written with any level of drama, it can still be compelling. But then again the author seems to use some acts, which he goes on and on with in great detail, just comes off as filler or trying to shock the listener by using graphic terms and explaining various acts in detail. I'm not really sure going into great detail on what particular acts were done when you don't really know the victims.
The reader is pretty bad, with bad pacing and zero inflection to his voice, does nothing to help you know who is speaking (good readers with do various accents or dialects to help you track who is speaking). The pacing issues, however, can mostly be fixed by just speeding up the audio. I choose 1.2x speed, which is just fast enough to make the pauses sound a bit more natural.'
Overall I'd give this book like 2.5 stars, but since you can't choose that I'll be generous and round up.
I'd love to see what a real author could do with this story.
