The author, Pat Hines, is Christmas’ great-great-great-granddaughter. She is on record in Florida as having the only African American Century Old Pioneer Farm. Pat tells about the quilts she inherited from slaves and the importance of the quilts to Christmas Hemming and other slaves. Although the three women shared a father, the similarities end there. Once they returned home, however, the sisters found their options limited by the laws and customs of early America. Harriet Hemings followed a different path. She escaped slavery — apparently with the assistance of Jefferson himself.
