  • "Well worth two hours of your time"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

This was one of my first Audible books, and I loved it. I found Julia Sweeney’s performance to be more than entertaining- I laughed and smiled most of the way through, thinking this person is brilliant, but it was clearly not all fun and games for her to come to her decision- to let go of God. How could it be? If you are interested in the spiritual, you should listen to this audio book, especially if your instinct is to push up against the title, not because I think you should be converted one way or the other, but because it’s that good. I feel we need to do more than just listen to what others think about when it comes these matters, we need to try to deeply understand their points of view in order to fully understand our own. This is well worth two hours of your time.

Julia Sweeney says she was a "happy Catholic girl" when, one day, she walked into church and signed up for a Bible-study course. "What an eye opener that was!" she says. Equally comedic and insightful, Letting Go of God is Sweeney's brilliant one-woman show about her struggle with her faith.

I have to say, i'm a Caroline Myss' addict. Can't have enough of her books, and i'm constantly listening over and over again to her audios. I can't have enough of learning about mystical laws, and especially from people, like Myss who respect other cultures and religions. Her language may seem a bit strong for many, but the Truths she tells are food for thought and spirit. Love this program. Love Myss.

  • "With this faith we will be able to ..."

    8 of 14 helpful votes

I was born after the 1963 Washington D.C. March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. I don't remember ever not knowing about Martin Luther King, Jr's August 28, 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech. Until I heard an NPR interview of Dustin Volz, who had written a story for The National Journal, I didn't realize that I hadn't ever heard the entire speech.

The "I Have a Dream" speech is under copyright protection until 2038. The Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr. Inc. holds the copyright, and enforces it vigorously. Legally, it's entitled to, but there's a huge debate about whether morally, it should, given its historical importance. I'll leave that debate to others - I was more than happy to pay for this Audible to hear the entire speech.

King, delivering the speech at the Lincoln Memorial 100 years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, gives the famous words "I Have a Dream" historic context, including the 1963 reality of segregation. He builds to a crescendo, with the encouragement of Mahalia Jackson, who can be heard on the Audible.

There is so much more to this speech than the common excerpts we see and hear.

It is the best speech I've ever listened to.

[The title of this review is from a portion of the "I Have a Dream" speech.]

"I have a dream today." On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King spoke these words as he addressed a crowd of more than 200,000 civil rights protesters gathered at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. Two months earlier, President John Kennedy had sent a civil rights bill to Congress, but it was struck down. Although Kennedy was concerned about the possibility of widespread violence during this protest, he realized he was powerless to stop it and embraced the movement instead.

In this lecture, Dr. Hawkins presents some basic ideas, such as the fact that everything happens spontaneously and that nothing causes anything. Everything is an automatic consequence of the energy field. He shows how the power of one’s intention brings about manifestation, and how potentiality becomes actuality in and of itself because of the field. He explains the use of kinesiology, why people may not believe in it, and how the infinite field of consciousness instantly registers truth.

Dr. Hawkins explains that everything is spontaneously being what it is and that nothing is causing anything. He talks about the pathway of negation and the Void, and goes into detail about karmic inheritance and how it affects our lives. Of great benefit is the information he supplies about relationships and the levels upon which they may exist, including the qualities of horizontal and vertical relationships (i.e., alignment vs. involvement). He goes into detail about the ego, how it loves suffering, loss, hatred, and even grieving, and the “juice” it gets out of that.

Intention, he explains, is not something you do, but an energy you're a part of. Finding one's calling is not just about finding something we can do - it is about finding what we can't not do. "Let your life speak" is a time-honored Quaker admonition to live one's life as witness to the deepest truths one knows. But as Parker Palmer explains, those words can also mean "listen to your life, and let it tell you what your truth is."
