AS a kid, the first thing I looked forward to after Christmas was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was always aired in Feb., which was sweeps month. I did not know that, I just knew it was sometime after Christmas. It was a great musical and this is a great book. They differ some and are the same a lot. The musical gave the Wicked Witch of the West a huge part that she did not have in the book. It was interesting to see the differences and easy to see why certain changes were made. The book is more violent, with some head chopping going on, but not enough to make the whole book not worth reading. It was published in 1900 and was the best selling children's book for two years.

Baum has an excellent imagination and I loved the ceramic people, which was not in the movie. There are lessons on courage, intelligence, tenderness, confidence and ambition, which children and adults of today can learn much.

Hathaway has taken a real beating by some reviewers. I did not always agree with her interpretations of the characters, (Valley girls did not exist when this was written) but I thought she brought life to the book. She kept it interesting. I much prefer a narrator that spices up the reading, as a reader who just mouths the words. Baum himself changed the book and characters in order to get it on Broadway. If he was alive today, I do not believe he would have a problem with his story being updated.

I also liked the book Wicked, which gives you the witches side of the story.

Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

RAINBOW PAINT DRIES VERY QUICK AND VERY HARD
Dahl has a wonderful imagination. Children will love this book and Adults will like it. I enjoyed it and was always interested in what was going to happen next. James and his giant insect friends and his giant peach manage to get into several fixes, but James always comes up with the type of solution that only a ten year old would dream up. I would recommend this for seven and up, but would also suggest that you get an illustrated copy to read along with listening, it should enhance the experience. I imagine nook has a copy.

How do you put your arms around an Earthworm's shoulders?
Four people die in this book. James becomes an orphan when his parents are eaten by a Rhino. We never meet his parents and it is told as something that happened in the past. It is not described in detail or anything, just used to make James a orphan, so we can get to the evil aunts. The aunts are squashed by the Peach. I really did not feel this was necessary to the story, but it was also not really spelled out and I believe most kids may not realize that they were killed. Older kids will figure it out and I thought you should be warned. All in all it is a book that will stir your child's imagination.

A little magic can take you a long way. After James Henry Trotter's parents are tragically eaten by a rhinoceros, he goes to live with his two horrible aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Life there is no fun, until James accidentally drops some magic crystals by the old peach tree and strange things start to happen. The peach at the top of the tree begins to grow, and before long it's as big as a house. Inside, James meets a bunch of oversized friends - Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug, and more. With a snip of the stem, the peach starts rolling away, and the great adventure begins!

So I'll start this review by saying that Oscar Wilde is already the biggest literary influence in my life. There are so many good things about this recording, it will be difficult to enumerate them all. Let me start by praising the voice actors. Their rendering of these stories is very emotional (with the exception of the firework story, that one is good but silly), done with obvious attention to the story that it almost feels like it's something that they wrote for their children. BTW, I wouldn't mind being read stories by Judi Dench every night before I went to sleep. My favorite, and always has been, is The Happy Prince. I swear to God I cry every single time I read it anyways, and the audio of it had me almost crying in my office. UGH so good. Some stories were new, others were old favorites, but all of it was just perfect. Everybody should own this/ be sharing these stories with everyone. Also a very good cause. You have literally no reason not to own this.

This is the first children's book I have reviewed. We often get them for grandchildren, but this is the first one I really felt was so good, I wanted to give it a "shout out." We recently took our 4 & 6 year old grandkids on a trip, and they listened to this. They had recently had an opportunity to get to know a bit about Einstein through another situation, so I thought it possible they might enjoy listening to a little about his life. I am not sure I had expected them to listen to all of it, but they did. Truthfully, I don't think they understood it all (especially parts like how Einstein had to avoid Germany during the war), but they were quite engaged. Given their ages, it helped that they knew a little about Einstein beforehand, but I will say that I also liked the book and its' narration. The book is written for children slightly older I'd say (doubt ours would have liked it without having first heard of him) but every bit is interesting and geared to kids' interest. For instance it (cleverly) began with how Einstein had had trouble learning to talk as a child, and how he found school boring. What kid wouldn't tune it to that? After that, they were hooked and we all found it well worth the credit! Recommend.

Everyone has heard of Albert Einstein-but what exactly did he do? How much do kids really know about Albert Einstein besides the funny hair and genius label? For instance, do they know that he was expelled from school as a kid? Finally, here's the story of Albert Einstein's life, told in a fun, engaging way that clearly explores the world he lived in and changed.

Jennifer Carlucci wrote the story Stevie Meanie Stinkerpots because as an educator, she's had many students come through her classroom with behavior problems. But, if you take the time to get to know their story and show them you care, you can turn their entire school experience into a positive one! Jennifer lives in Fairfield, Virginia, with her husband, Nick, two daughters, Katie and Sophia, their dogs Shiloh and Ace, their cats, Olive and Rue, and their horses, Elmer and Arrow.
