    Story

I expect to listen to this book again in the not-too-distant future, because I am sure I missed a lot that I can pick up on a second time. As it is, I see so many of Screwtape's character traits in people I know, as well as in myself. Reading this book was like looking into a mirror in which one hardly recognizes oneself until forced to look long enough to see what is truly there. So often what one sees is very scary.

Unlike Screwtape, we still have the option of changing our lives for the better. That, to me, is the huge lesson of this book

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

In spite of being leery about books read by their authors, I listened to this book read by
Sedaris himself. My concerns were ungrounded as I quickly realized he was as good a narrator, or maybe I should say performer, as he was an author: he kept me in stitches throughout this whole book. It is a collection of memoirs based on Sedaris' life, but told through exceptionally good writing and with insightful humor, making his drug addiction and other excesses seem forgivable. Throughout the book, I had no doubt that Sedaris accepts responsibility for his mistakes, and that somewhere along the way he decided to get clean, or at least cleaner, and make something of his life. His ability to poke fun at himself and his slightly strange family is evident as he turns event after average event into reasons to laugh out loud. Decidedly gay, he is nevertheless entertaining to all kinds of audiences.

On a personal note, although clever, the only part of the book I did not enjoy were the dog poems. Others will say that is the best part, and I understand. They just came across as smutty to me. My favorite parts were "learning to speak French," and "disdain of computers." So funny!

I love Dave Berry. He makes me smile. He makes me laugh so hard I cry. And sometimes he makes me think. He can be tender and serious, as this book proves out. But mostly he just makes me happy. Sometimes I just can't take another heavy book, and I need a little fun and lightness in my life. That is the time to turn to Dave Barry.

Narrator Arte Johnson is perfect for this book. I just didn't want it to end.

Diane's greatest hits:

    "Audio format doesn't suit..."

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I think Roy Blount Jr. is a marvelous commentator and comic, but this book just does not work in audio format. Imagine someone reading Bartlett's Quotations to you--even if you might have enjoyed a few quotations, it would quickly grow pretty tedious no matter how skilled the reader. In print, this is the sort of book you might enjoy a few pages at a time before falling asleep or waiting for the kettle to boil. Or to put it a bit more crudely, it's the perfect bathroom book.

  • More Information Than You Require

    "Magnificent Nerd Humor"

    Overall

Hodgman is great! His fake “information” is delightfully imaginative and intelligent. He is joined by several guests in his narration of the book's first half, all of whom add to the high spirits. Numerous “Easter eggs" show up for those who happen to be familiar with a particular field of knowledge. I really enjoyed these when I got them, but I'm sure I missed many.

The second half of the book consists of his “It Happened Today” daily calendar (previously podcast) and an enumeration of literally hundreds of identifiers of “molemen”. This half is best appreciated in small doses as it can be a bit much when taken in large quantities.

  • That Is All

"Zenith of World Knowledge Conclusively Achieved!!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

In this eagerly awaited final volume of his compendium of world knowledge, Hodgman has reached the apex of his career (and finale if, as he predicts, the world will end with Ragnarök on 12/21/2012).

Hodgman's skill at creating and describing a delightfully ridiculous version of reality never fails to please. His mock serious narration of the "facts," together with the contributions of various guests, including Paul Rudd, Jonathan Coulton, Jon Hamm, Rachel Maddow, Paul F. Tompkins, Dick Cavett, and Brooke Shields, makes for a delightful listen.

Hodgman addresses issues that are admittedly tough for him, such as wine and sports, but he valiantly soldiers on, relying on just enough actual facts for the listener to start wondering where the real stuff stops and the fantastical begins.

A large part of the pleasure of this audiobook is Hodgman's own wonderfully dry narration which, along with the guest commentaries, makes for the perfect, and very funny, audiobook experience.

Magnificent nerd humor--make sure you catch it before Ragnarök!

  • Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir)

"Trying too hard to be funny..."

    Overall

    Story

While it had its moments, overall I found the author's portrayal of her life to be fairly trite and, ultimately, annoying. Her narration didn't help--shrill and overacted. I played the last half of the book as background noise.

  • "Like a Cast of Thousands"

    29 of 33 helpful votes

George Carlin need only be heard to be appreciated. You remember him pacing and gesturing as he crouched on the stage, delivering rapid-fire, surgical observations on the follies of humankind. Maybe it's his early days in radio, but the voice is among the most expressive anywhere. He leaps from rage to rant to sotto voce, from lecturing to confiding, as he plays a whole range of the characters who populate his wildly imaginative essays. You could listen to him for hours--and you will. Along the way you'll remember that Carlin was never just a comic. He was an articulate, informed, educated, and always opinionated eyewitness to the human condition. Hilarious and off-color, of course, but he covers an awful lot of ground in this collection, and really makes you think.
