This is another book that I will listen to again and again. I bought this one because it was a best seller, having never watched her on SNL and watched 30 rock a handful of times I wasn't sure what to expect. This has changed me into a 30 Rock fan as well as a Tina Fey fan and I really hope she writes another book!

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told....

If you are a huge Jen Lancaster fan like me (read all her books (sometimes twice), read ALL of her blog entries (again with the sometimes twice), I have even gone to a book signing, you are going to be a little disappointed to recognize ALOT of the stories that are in this book. I love hearing her read them but because I have already read them myself (sometimes twice...ok alot of times twice) I feel like I am hanging out with a friend who is telling me the same stories over and over and when she starts one I'm like, "Do I stop her and tell her I have heard this or be polite and just let her tell me again?"

That's the ONLY reason for the 3 stars.

If you are new to Jen or are maybe less familiar with her work ....you will love this!

In Such a Pretty Fat, Jen Lancaster learned how to come to terms with her body. In My Fair Lazy, she expanded her mind. Now, the New York Times best-selling author gives herself - and her generation - a kick in the X, by facing her greatest challenge to date: acting her age. Jen is finally ready to put away childish things (except her Barbie Styling Head, of course) and embrace the investment-making, mortgage-carrying, life insurance-having adult she's become.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

  • The Dark Tourist: Sightseeing in the World's Most Unlikely Holiday Destinations

"Funny and Insightful - Not just for Travelers!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

As an avid traveler, this book appealed to me as an opportunity to get a another person's point of view on some places I've never been. After reading the book however, I think anyone with a good sense of humor and curiosity would really enjoy this book.

Between being narrated by the author himself, and the auto-biographical nature of the subject, it's an extremely personal account of this smart, funny man's experiences. I found his insights clever and the experiences with the different individuals in each place were very true to the experience every traveler has when meeting up with people by chance on the road.

He paints a vivid picture of each spot he goes to; Iran (to ski!), the US (famous assassination locations and 9/11 sites) , the Ukraine (Chernobyl), North Korea (State organized tour) and Lebanon (his childhood home).

In each location, something strange, shocking, or unique happens; from being stuck in the elevator from hell and his insanely difficult way of extracting himself from it, to being on the same tour to Chernobyl as a man that has a very bizarre reaction to the site, to heading home to Lebanon only to find he may have attended private school with Osama Bin Laden. Every stop of this fantastic tour had it's own twists and turns, and I loved them all.

I was sorry when it was over, and hope for another book by the author soon.

  • America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom

"I Had To Turn It Off."

    Story

What a wonderful, refreshing idea for a book - finally two people trying to show what respectful discourse can look like on the political stage. I praise both the authors for their wonderful intent and a good reading of their work.

That being said, I had to finally cut it off half way through. I really wanted to make myself finish, but I just couldn't take it anymore. The issue was not "Republican" or "Democrat". It was simply that - in my opinion, and my opinion only - one of the two authors was so much more mature than the other, and expressed their viewpoints so much more effectively, that the other author came across as childish and superficial whenever it was their turn to speak. The longer I listened, the starker the difference became; until I had to turn it off, because it was grating on my nerves. Add to this that (at least for the first half that I listened to) we never really got off the ground into discussing the meat and potatoes of the issues; much seemed more a simple travelogue, as they go to Vegas, and get lapdances... for love of country?

I'm not going to share which author was which in this scenario, mainly because I don't think it matters, and also because no matter which author I name, I run the risk of offending people and immediately having it attributed to some sort of political leaning, which I promise it was not.

I have a great deal of admiration for both of the authors for embarking on this project at all, and think the world would be a far better place if more people took a page from their book (if you'll pardon the pun).

  • The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass

"Audio isn't the right format for this sort of book"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I want to be clear that my rating on this one isn't a reflection of the book itself - I'm just trying to suggest that you may want to stop and consider (as I should have) if audio is the right format for a book that is almost completely composed of independent 30 second sound bytes each of which starts with the phrase "New Rule!"

It was just too repetitive to enjoy in this format, which I should have realized if I'd given it more thought ahead of time. I'm sure it's a clever amusing book for people that like Bill Maher, but only if it's in physical form where you can pick it up, read a couple, and put it back down. There's only so many times you can hear "New Rule!" in a three minute period before you realize your judgement was off. Definitely my own fault for not thinking it through.

  • "Hysterical manual for the 21st cent..."

    16 of 16 helpful votes

Usually I can't get through a book of comical columns. This is the rare exception. Caitlin touches on EVERYTHING a woman has ever grappled with, but rarely will bring up, even to her best friend. With every topic, with relentless British humor, she brings you to a place of seeing the most common of things totally differently. From Brazilian waxes to high heels to childbirth to one of the funniest, most astute pieces on relationships I've ever read, she irreverently tears the conventional, cultural norms to shreds and offers up a lucid, common sense look at things we too often inanely follow like lemmings.

While walking along the Pacific, listening to How To Be A Woman, a friend rode up on her bike. She's the same age as me, 59, has a successful business and who ran so much, prepping for a marathon to impress her kids, that she got plantar fasciitis. That was two months ago and she can still not walk far, never mind run. She breathlessly, sweating profusely, related how she goes to spin class three times a week, swims every day she can, and bikes umpteen miles to LOSE WEIGHT. This woman was, before she stated all this marathon training, MUCH THINNER THAN ME (and I'm a person whom no one considers fat, ok, except me,) and married to a guy who adores her no matter what she weighs. Having been quite happy race walking in the sunshine by the sea, I would have instantly switched to feeling like a clumsy elephant if it weren't for this book, to which I was listening. Caitlin is my heroine. She brings the insanity women just take for granted front and center and kept making me say to myself, "Well, of course!"

This book also provoked numerous discussions with friends and family; the most amazing conversations about subjects we'd never touched before. This is such a mind opening book, so informative, while causing one to constantly laugh out loud (which is no simple feat for a book.)

The first chapter is deceptive and Caitlin, stand up comedian she is, can be a bit loud. But stick with it, please, and then laugh your head off and, if you're a woman, be prepared to feel far more secure in your own sneakers than you did at the start. If you're a man, be prepared to actually start to understand those female enigmas around you. And no matter who you are, you will, without a doubt, look at everything around you in a whole new light.

Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them? Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother.
