  • "Tiger Woods is not Black"

    Overall

    Story

According to George Carlin, Tiger Woods is not black, skin color has nothing to do with it. I believe Carlin thought he was black. Pipe smokers should just suck d#@k, People who walk around listening to walkmans are arrogant pricks. As I was walking my dog listening to Carlin on my headphones, thinking about smoking my pipe when I got home, I found this a strange way to start out a book. Oh just before that he talked how other comedians where idiots who had hope and always offered advice to fix things and how they are political and he is not. I then listened to seven hours of how he could make the world better and his views on politics. He starts out by pretty much bashing everybody. He thinks people in the midwest are soft and boring, the people in the South are all bigots, etc. The only ones worth a sh@t are the New Yorkers, cause they live everyday knowing they can get mugged.

Ignoring the constant put downs, negativity, and trying to make himself seem different by just saying off the wall things he thinks might piss someone off, I find him to be very, very funny and smart. (Although anybody can bitch, that does not take smarts.) I love almost all his routines on the English language and how Americans use them. Like the routine about getting on an Airplane. He is getting in, not on and all the terms used in flying, like the Terminal, etc. I love how he describes baseball, how he feels about those who want to save the planet, his comments on dogs, prostitution, time, germs, what true sports are, cats, etc.

He puts down yuppies (he who wore a pony tail for how long?), businessmen, people with money, (he was probably a millionaire), whites (he who was lily white), anyone who lives anyplace other then New York ( he moved to California). He calls several people arrogant, yet to be a comedian or a writer don't you have to believe you are so important other people will pay to hear you or buy your books or buy the audible versions of your books that you read. When your busy being arrogant and putting everyone else down it is hard to see your own faults.

I gave this four stars, cause he is entertaining and gives you plenty to think about. You just need to be prepared to have your self put down in some way, it will happen, brush it off and listen to what he really has to say.

Parts of this are so funny, that if you listen and drive you may be in an accident. It is hard to see where you are going when you are tearing up from laughter. The name says it all this is Classic and it is Gold.

Carlin has always been my favorite comedian. The wit, the voices, the edge, it is all combined to make you laugh and think at the same time. There is a lot here on words and how we use them, and of course the seven words you can't say on tv. There is a slight bit on politics and he takes us back to our childhood with Class Clown.

Last year I listened to his biography "Last Words" which came out after his death. It is also a great listen or read.

    Carlin is a legend.

I did not watch TF on Saturday Night live much, but I love 30 Rock. Parts of this book made me laugh and parts made me think. It was cool to get a behind the scene look at Second City, SNL, and 30 Rock. I also thought it was motivational. It is easy to see why TF is so successful. She works hard, is very intelligent and makes no excuses

Sean's greatest hits:
  • Dad Is Fat

"Good for Gaffigan fans - better for expecting dads"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Dad Is Fat to be better than the print version?

Yes. Gaffigan edits a lot of the passages to be unique to the audio book, and his voices are a big part of his standup routine. I would have been reading in his voice anyway, so why not cut out the middleman?

If you’ve listened to books by Jim Gaffigan before, how does this one compare?

I haven't listened to a book, but I've listened to his stand-up. This sounds a lot like his stand-up, but at times, it's pretty obvious that he's trying to read word-for-word.

What about Jim Gaffigan’s performance did you like?

His voices and his audiobook-only quips.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It's almost 6 hours long. I've got things to do.

    Any additional comments?

The book is really great, but I feel like there are a couple of things Gaffigan fans should know before they start listening/reading:

1 - This is a book about being a dad. I know that seems obvious, but if you aren't a dad, or aren't thinking of becoming a dad, then you might not really like this book. If you're a college kid that likes jokes about Hot Pockets, you might be able to skip this one. There are a few chuckles in here, but you won't identify with them.

2 - There's a rhythm to this book that is a little jarring in an audiobook format. Each chapter ends with a joke, which is usually a callback from earlier in the chapter - and then the next chapter just starts. The chapters are very short, and the result is a very jarring transition between chapters. There were times when I would look up to read a street sign, and all of a sudden, Jim Gaffigan was talking about something completely different, and I barely had time to digest what he just started talking about 3 minutes ago. The book took a lot more focus than a normal book.

3 - This isn't 6 hours of standup. It's Jim Gaffigan reading a book by Jim Gaffigan. A lot of the joke delivery might seem off, especially when he recycles a joke from one of his shows (that happens a few times).

4 - If you DON'T have kids, expect to be a little baby-crazy by the end of this book. Speaking from personal experience, I had to be talked down from the baby-ledge by my girlfriend after reading this. Luckily, I recovered, and I'm still happily babyless.

  • "Freaking hilarious!"

Where does Dating a Stripper is A Recipe for Perspective rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It isn't really an audiobook, more like a comedy bit.

What other book might you compare Dating a Stripper is A Recipe for Perspective to and why?

    None.

Have you listened to any of Patton Oswalt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is an essay, but it pretty much is a stand-up bit. If you like Oswalt this is really funny.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I laughed... A lot...

    Any additional comments?

This is funny and if you are a hard core fan get it. The problem is that it is incredibly short (8 minutes). So, don't waste a credit. It is less than $2 to buy. If you don't like Patton Oswalt pass on this one.
