I was first introduced to audiobooks during a summer when I decided to drive a truck in order to pay for college. Listening to books all day, every day was the only thing that made that job bearable.

At this point everyone knows what Twilight is about and very little needs to be said about the characters or plot. What does need to be mentioned, though, is Ilyana Kadushin's unparalleled performance as Bella. After listening to this book I had a hard time believing Kristen Stewart's performance in the films. She just falls short of what Ilyana is able to accomplish here. Fantastic.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend they read the actual book and skip the audio version. The story is okay, but the quality of the audiobook is not.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rosemary. She was very brave and noble and I like the mystery behind her past.

What didn’t you like about Ron Rifkin’s performance?

Many of the sentences trailed off rather than ending strong and clear. He also made noises with his mouth. I assume this happens often with actors, but that stuff is usually edited out.

Could you see The Giver being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I guess I could see it. I am not invested enough to guess the cast though.

    Any additional comments?

The background music was HORRIBLE! They blasted you out with tacky synth music for EVERY SINGLE significant moment! It took me out of the moment because I was rolling my eyes.

  • "A good read for older children"

    10 of 10 helpful votes

We listened to this book on a car trip. While it was a good book with an interesting premise, I think it was a bit too mature for my youngest (age 8). It was appropriate for my daughter, age 12, who enjoyed the book, as did I.

The book had lots of things going on that were fun, amusing and thought-provoking. But it also addressed juvenile death and, somewhat thinly veiled, the loss of virginity.

It seemed only yesterday that the skinny, freckled redhead had first come to Prince Edward Island. Now here was Anne, a pretty sixteen, teaching at the Avonlea school and all grown up. Well, not quite grown up. In fact, Anne was not very different from her restless young pupils, their rows of bright, inquisitive eyes staring at her that first day of class. Anne was as mischievous and high-spirited as ever.

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

Jonah and his younger brother, Simon, are on their own. They set out to find what's left of their family, carrying between them 10 dollars, a backpack full of dirty clothes, a notebook, and a stack of letters from their brother, who is serving a tour in Vietnam. And soon into their journey, they have a ride. With a man and a beautiful girl who may be in love with Jonah. Or Simon. Or both of them.
